Getting reacquainted with a gun I’d neglected
Around 15 years or so ago or so I happened across a 60-4 in a pawn/gun shop display case. It had been there for a while, and the shop catered to the SASS crowd, so the shop owner agreed to a straight-across trade for an Uberti SAA clone I wasn’t using.
I shot it quite a bit at first, but like many here I have more guns that I need, so this revolver dropped out of my shooting rotation for a few years. Fast-forward to today, when I decided that it had been neglected for too long. I took it out back with a bunch of hand rolled wadcutters and was pleased to find that it shoots every bit as well as I remembered. What a great little gun.
(Please forgive the ugly Dremel-in-my-lap speedloader cut. I was in a hurry, and I planned to “clean it up later.” I’ll clean it up later.)

What are the first three letters of the serial number?
And the numbers if you don't mind sharing.

I don’t mind sharing in the least. Its serial number is BFV2778.
According to our distinguished S&W Historian it shipped in December of 1990.

Thanks!
Mine have the factory Uncle Mike's combat grips, but those Altamont rosewoods are looking good on there.
The 60-4 is my favorite of the "newer" Chiefs Specials. Others like smooth triggers, but the serrated trigger on the 60-4 works for me.

This particular gun had Pachmayr Grippers when I purchased it. I don’t *hate* Pachmayrs, but they didn’t suit this gun at all and had to go.

Very nice Model 60 Chiefs Special Target.
I have the same revolver in matte blue
The CSTs, with their superior sights, tend to shoot much more accurately than most folks expect a J-Frame to shoot.
The laminated RoseWood grips look much better than the black rubber that it shipped with

I'm with you.
Here are two from my 1989 flavor-of-the-month collection: a 36-2 DAO and a 36-6 CST; both wear the factory "glass beaded satin blue" finish and -- my favorites -- combats stocks.

I believe the original grips on mine were Uncle Mike’s version of Goodyear Grips. They reside in the original box, seldom to see the light of day. It had faux ivories for a while but I love my dark ebony-ish smooth combats from Thailand!

OP - I generally run luke warm on J frames, but that revolver would make an excellent woods packing pistol without weighing you down. I like it.

I think that is what this gun is best at. It’s essentially a “big boy” kit gun.

I have it "dark" brother; 36-6. I saw a 60-4 about 3 months later and regretted my purchase of the 36-6, purely because the matte blue is a little tender, it shows holster wear quickly. Have a 586 6" ND which is the Distinguished Combat Masterpiece, since the 36-6 looks so much like the 586 that shrunk in the rain, my 36-6 is my Distinguished Trail Masterpiece. Very handy and accurate little revolver..
