Default Unusual Model 49?

I purchased this lightly used a few years ago. The trigger and hammer appear to be flash chromed. The trigger is smooth and a little wider than my other J frames. The serial # is ACA 41xx, and the revolver is a no dash. The SCSW shows the serial number range running from 163501 - 786544. The action is exceptional for a J frame, and I have a few to compare. The grips are mine and added later. I'm looking for the originals which were smooth with silver S&W medallions and are kicking around somewhere in the safe. Any ideas about the serial number and the trigger/hammer, which appear original to the gun? Any thoughts are welcome.

The gun has been re-finished. Check the rounding over of the frame lug, buffed out slot of the thumbpiece nut, etc. Edges where two parts meet, like yoke/frame, should be sharp edged, not rounded. Color is wrong for a S&W, a nearly black nitrate blue. The hammer and trigger are re-finished too and are not "flash chrome" but bright, hopefully hard chrome. The flash chrome from S&W is matte, not polished. On a blue gun S&W would have used color case-hardened parts, without exception. All the noted serial number range indicates is "Before beginning the 'alphabet' serial numbers". The barrel pin was deleted in 1982. The ACA*** number dates to 1983. The .312 width smooth-faced trigger was standard (without the chrome).

Nothing unusual at all.

The hammer and trigger appear to be polished, my guess is that they are "in the white", not hard chromed. It's a normal thing - folks polish their forged parts and leave them that way - many times you see it when someone ground/sanded the serrations off the trigger.
That was someone's "using" gun, the mods are suitable for a carry gun, the Spegels make a nice enhancement for carry/shooting.

Hi, a gun of this era would have had checkered walnut service stocks. The J frame Centennial (hammerless) guns usually had smooth walnut stocks.

I would add that you shouldn't casually discard the Spegel grips. They're worth more than the originals to the right party. It does look like a nice carry piece.

Regards,

Jerry

Thanks to all for the good info. The Spegels were mine and will definitely stay on one of my J frames.

I had smooth mid-width "combat" triggers fitted to several my Smith's at the Service Center many yeares ago for DA work. Of course, I retain the original triggers as they were returned to me.
On my J frames, a smooth trigger was not available at that time (don't know if they are now). It was an easy matter to have the serated target triggers installed... when I got home I lifted the trigger out, polished the serations out, oiled lightly & reinstalled. The case color shows on the rear of the triggers but the face is bright.
Alternately, the parts might have been refinished. A friend who did military contract work bright plated cetain parts for accent on my original 39-2...
