Default Pinnacle Guns (Mark Hartshorne) gunsmithing

I'm thinking about sending my 686 to Pinnacle Guns (Mark Hartshorne) for some gunsmithing work. The prices are very reasonable, but I'm wondering about the quality of work and the turnaround times. If you have experience with Pinnacle Guns, please post about your experience and whether you would recommend using him.

P.S. I called S&W about the cost of their services and they are 2-4 times higher than those of Pinnacle Guns. If the quality of work is good and turnaround times are fast, I don't see a reason to pay more and wait longer just to have S&W do the work.

Thanks!

If you call Mark he'll let you know what his backlog is like at the moment. About a year ago he worked on my 360 - rechambered it, cut the cylinder for moonclips, chamfered the charge holes, replaced the front sight, bobbed the hammer, rounded and polished the hammer, and did an action job. Took a bit less than two months. I'm very happy with his work, the gun turned out exactly as I wanted it and I've never had a bit of trouble with it. I carry it everyday, either off-duty or as my BUG.

Maybe two years ago, he modified the cylinder of my 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt to take .45 ACP in moonclips (as well as .45 Colt without moonclips). He did a great job, for a reasonable price, in just the amount of time he promised. I would happily use his services again.

I have only ever had Mark drill and tap 657, .41 mag. He did an excellent job and the turn around time was just a few weeks from my shipping it to him, to my receiving it back.

I would not hesitate to use his services again.

Rick

He does excellent work, but don't expect it to be very fast. Unfortunately all good gunsmiths have a backlog of work.

Thanks for the input, guys. I spoke with Mark this afternoon. He was very helpful. Unfortunately, he will not be able to begin work until early or mid February. Ideally, I'd like to get it done earlier, but will probably end up putting down a deposit with Mark.

WC145--How do you like his action job? What would you estimate the trigger pull in SA?

Yeah, if you can wait, Mark's work is worth it. I recently purchased a 315 Night Guard for my wife, I'll be sending the cylinder to him to be cut for moonclips and chamfered.

I'm very happy with the action job he did on my gun. I'd estimate the DA to be in the 8-9lb range, very smooth. The SA is incredible and to be honest I can't even call it trigger "pull". I put my finger on the trigger and think "fire" and the hammer falls, I can't even feel the trigger move. I don't know what that equates to in weight, a pound? Maybe less?

Also, I have never had any ignition issues with it, regardless of the caliber or brand of ammo I use it is 100% reliable.

Yeah, I think I'll wait. Mark told me to put down a $25 deposit and that he'll call me when he's ready for me to mail in the revolver. So despite the fact that I'll have to wait awhile, I'll still have the firearm to shoot.

My 686 has a great action job already (~2.8 lbs SA pull) but I will ask Mark to check it out and tell me what he thinks. I definitely want Mark to install an interchangeable front sight system with green fiber optic front sight, crane ball lock, chamfer and polish the cylinder holes, and drill and tap the frame. He'll also refinish the revolver for me in a brushed satin finish (he talked me out of bead blasting).

Last I heard Mark had suffered a heart attack, and this was 3-4 months ago. His website mentioned this for a while, but stated he was recovering and was back to work however I have yet to be able to get in touch with him in a very long time....Hopefully he is ok and recovering well.

I had Mark do a cylinder conversion for me a few months ago. Work as promised and quick turn around, can't complain a bit.

Just noticed this is a very old post, original poster probably got the work done and wore the gun out by now.

I hadn't heard about Mark falling ill but I haven't talked to him since late last fall. I know he's had a bunch of stress in his life the last few years I hope he's doing well.

I don't know how things turned out for the OP but I've had mark do more work for me since this thread posted, including fitting a titanium .38spl cylinder to my 360J so that it's a convertible now. I'm still happy with it and still carrying it several days a week.
