DOB for a Model 649 Bodygaurd
I know I'm a Centennial kinda guy but when I came across this very nice 649 No Dash I had to have it..
Serial # is AYP1606.. has an odd yolk # set of 12XXX ..
When was this little pocket gun made? Pre MIM, No Lock & 100% Forged goodness & the first J frame capable of SA fire I've had in years since a M60 that I once had..
I'd Guess the very first non pinned barrel M649.. Has hammer mounted firing pin..
Has Box, Papers, Cards, Vapor Paper & factory RB magnas..
I had to put a set of Uncle Mikes Boots on it as I'm hooked on Spegels.. The UMs hang over in the rear ever so slightly.
Pics to come tomarrow..
This gun has been carried some & shot very little..
My very first Bodygaurd.. Also has flashed chromed hammer & trigger..
Gotta love these stainless J Frames..
I don't think I'd want to but I'm already wondering if my extra 9mm 940-1 cylinder will fit this heavyweight & have DA/SA capabilities..
Gun had very heavy factory hammer spring, I'm sure I'll try a wolff rp from the spring stash box..
Lord help me with my J Frame addiction..
" I'd Like For You To Meet My Bodygaurd"
Wanted Bodygaurd grips possibly Spegels cut specificly for the M38/49/649..Or Factory Smooth J Frame magnas maybe some Coco Bolo like the CDNN ones shown here.. Or??
Smith & Wesson J Frame, Round Butt Deluxe Coco Bolo Grips New

Hi, 1987 production, well after the switch away from the pinned barrel. There is another recent thread about converting a 640 to a 940, sounds like a "somewhat" uncomplicated job. Please post those photos!

I think the 649 wants to shoot 9x23s, It will feel more important and it's K-L and N framed piers will respect him more!!
Here's the two I was telling you about
And J frame collecting is not too bad,,, The N frame collecting is when you have to start worrying!

There are usually several of the cocobolo grips as you have described on the big auction site. I just sold a set for a 60 LS for 30. Prices seem reasonable for the "banana" style. Ahrends also makes a set for the J frame.

Well I didn't get around to taking any pics today while the sun was out so tonight I took a few.
1st shows the box & label, 2nd shows the 649 as I found it laying it it's box, 3rd a shot from the passengers side.

The model 649... ESPECIALLY one from that era...is at the top of my wish list. I have it's big brother - a model 38 no dash from a few years earlier - around 1985/86. It bears serial #AHH57xx.
Maybe someday I can find a 649 around that same era to partner up with my Airweight Bodyguard.

I wish I could get used to how Ugly this little thing is..
Other than that it's great..
In fact my Wife realy likes it, So it may be staying around..
I would trade it straight up for a LNIB Glock 19 though..

649's
Gotta love the 649 ...It has the best of both worlds......
Wont snag on the pocket and has single action accurracy.
Top model 649 1985 introductory number #"1" of 100 made , Serial number AHT XX001.
Shown next to its lighter brother the model 38 airweight in nickel.
Below is 649 comemorative #1 next to another 649 made a few years later.
( I replaced the factory Uncle Mike rubber grips with S&W wood).

I've got plenty of stainless J frames & realy bought this gun to resell or trade but is growing on me..
Mine is the older style with the firing pin on the hammer & the end shake screw is the fit style..
I've wanted one for many years..

They will grow on you.
I had 1 once Gary.
Now I think I have 4 of them and one on me now.
Try to carry it IWB,,,,, You will notice that you cant find a more comfortable J frame,,,,, Well a Model 38 is a bit lighter, I was thinking of using one of those for a 9x23 conversion, But I dont think the Alum framed J frame would like 9x23 very much at all.
So I left the two lightweights alone.

I can't carry IWB currently as I'm right handed & have a torn rotator cuff in that shoulder I can barely reach my wallet but no way can I reach my waist band, Probobly have 4 decent IWB holsters that just sit in the stash container..
Pocket carry is what I am used to or shoulder holster & that's tough on my shoulder too..
If anybody is going to be in Lexington "Black Friday" at the RK/Kenny Woods Gunshow Bring a Cherry Glock 19 & I'll trade you "Straight Up" for the M649.. Being one of those plastic pistols shouldn't cost any more than $450-$500 NEW, I should be able to trade it easily expecialy with how nice the Bodygaurd is & has Box, Papers, Cleaning Kit etc.
This would be for Kentucky residents only..
Gary/Hk
Your Right Peter, The more I fondle this little gem the more I like it.
But my Centennials are my #1 carry pieces.
Thanks & Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday.
Also Peter/pred thanks a bunch for the box of K/L frame Square Butt Grips, I was able to use the Hogue & the Sile, Pachmayr, & Uncle Mikes are going into the stash container..
Gary/Hk
