Default 27-2 bore rust vs accuracy

pawn shop had a beautiful 27-2 with and 8 3/8 inch barrel, probably 95% asking $394. Almost couldn't pull my wallet out fast enough. When I looked in the bore there was a 1/4 inch rust spot about 2 inches away from the muzzle. How would this have affected accuracy.

It depends on how severe the rust spot is. It may be only light, surface rust that could be removed with a good cleaning of the barrel. If the rust has caused pitting, this could possibly affect accuracy if it imparts deformations to the bullet as it travels down the barrel but I would think this would be unlikely. If it is a nice 27-2 and if you think the rust spot may only be light rust, at a price of $394 I don't think I could pass it up. And you also may be able to use that rust spot to get the pawn dealer to come down on the price a bit.

It's not unusual for me to bring a cleaning kit to the shop/pawnshop, and clean the gun I'm interested in buying. I've never had a dealer object, as long as I use common sense (keep out of the way of customers, don't make a mess, etc.). If I don't buy the gun, the dealer is left with a clean piece - no harm done.

My guess is accuracy would not be affected at all. I own and have owned a few guns with less than pristine bores that would shoot better than me. As long as the damage is not at muzzle I don't think its a problem as long as it's not severe.

I wouldn't think it would affect it. I used to shoot milsurps that had a little rust or pitting and they still shot well (although I did my best to clean them up and prevent any further degradation)

Back in the 1990's, I bought a DWM P08 Luger that looked like it had been through three world wars!!

The entire gun was pitted, including the bore, which was both worn, and pitted. I really figured accuracy would be doubtful from this old relic.

Once I got the thing working, it shot great!! Really one of the most accurate 9mm pistols I've owned.

Later on, I bought another, much, much nicer condition Mauser made P08 Luger. It shoots fine too, but not as good as the somewhat older Parabellum with the ****** bore.

Got some milsurp bolt rifles with less than pristine bores that shoot superbly too.

One thing I've noticed for sure kills accuracy is bad rifling at the muzzle, or a damaged crown. A bit of corrosion, or pitting most likely won't hurt anything.
