Default suggestions please

I just bought a model 66-5 357 Mag and I have enjoyed cleaning a shooting so much I want to buy another gun for the car. The 66-5 will stay in the night stand. So my needs are to have a gun that can stay locked up in the trunk of my SUV...I live in Minnesota so it gets hot and then cold all winter long in the car. I want to have...I think at least a 3" and better yet a 4" barrel because I would like to target shoot with it when I am out on my ATV. I think I want a 38 stainless and really would like to spent about $300 bucks. I think I would want the ability to shoot +P ammo if I could. Thanks for the help this is a nice forum!

Check into the Mod. 64's that seem to be showing up on the used market as police trade in's.

J&G sales has lots of model 64s. They are k frame just like your model 66. They are 38 cal and fixed sights.

Blue steel,
10, 13, 15, 19 all are K frames (the 19 is the blue steel version of your 66)
Stainless steel
64, 65, 66, 67 all are K frames.
The 13, 19, 65, and 66 are all chambered in .357.
The 10, 15, 64, and 67 are all .38 Special only.
15, 19, and 67 have adjustable rear sights, the rest fixed.
The cheapest in stainless will likely be the 64's or a 65 in 4" barrel length. (former duty guns)

(EDIT) You can single action a bobbed hammer UNLESS it came spec equipped or was altered to run D/A/O. Many departments, agencies and/or companies required it. Any can be retrofit to run D/A S/A again if desired. Personally for a S/D car gun IMHO your better off D/A/O.

Why not just buy another Model 66?

Then all your ammo, speed loaders, holsters and cleaning gear would fit both revolvers...

You have an SUV with a trunk? What kind is that?

No matter what kind of vehicle you have, any vehicle is a lousy place to store a firearm. A doped out loser with a brick gets into your ride and suddenly he is an armed doped out loser. Please re-think leaving a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Thanks.

Offer a suggestion if you want to leave a gun in your car. Over on the "Glockstore.com" website, there is a "Car lock box" advertised. You will need to search for it, but it has a steel cable which comes out of the steel box and loops around the frame of your car seat. The box will hold a Glock 23, probably most 4 inch autos. I have put my 686 2.5 inch snubby in it in the past. It then locks with a key. You can't get the box out once it's closed & locked -- possibly with a bolt cutter. The key lock is probably the weakest point if you took a hammer and punch to it. But its at least a suggestion. I don't particularly like the idea of leaving a gun in the car and not having it with you anyway. There are times :ex: going on school grounds, police stations, court houses when you can't carry. Best of luck.

My car was stolen right out my driveway a couple months ago. I am glad I did not leave any guns in there, but the thieves got and trashed everything else. This is actually the event the re-awakened my interest in guns.

Point is: it is very easy for somebody to steal your car and I don't like the idea of leaving a gun in there either.

I've also had cars broken into, both a night in my driveway & daytime, parked where people are supposed to park. Lucky for the night thief that I didn't wake up a minute sooner. I believe one needs to carry a gun to control access properly. I don't like leaving firearms on cars or boats. (In the course of my day job at a boat yard, I found the hidden guns on a trawler style yacht... 2 SS pistols, a SS mini14, a chromed 12 guage mariner model.

Hi and welcome to the forum. It seems like a model 64 would fit the bill quite nicely. There are many out there that can be had in your price range,it is a 38 cal,and usually in the 4inch variety as a police trade in.If I were king I would put the majority of officers nationwide back with revolvers because it seems like they have sacrificed marksmanship for capacity.Thier loss is your gain.I would think long and hard leaving a firearm in a car because if someone takes your car they also have your gun.It is very illegal to leave a pistol in your car here in "THE KINGDOM OF NY" for that very reason

My BMW X5 has run flat tires so that area is a lockable trunk. The car is parked in my heated garage every night. It is parked our front at work and I can see it at all times. It has a pretty nice security system in it. I would keep it cased with a speed loader handy and a trigger lock on it.

Check out budsguns.com, they had some police trade in's for $279.
I have bought guns from them before and I would again (if only I had some cash!).

BTW, I was thinking that if one had to stop, unlock the trunk, unlock the spare tire area (sorry I am not familar with BMW's but wish I was), unlock the gunlock, load the gun...I'm not to sure what type of senarios (sorry I can't spell but maybe that is why I don't have a BMW) that would warrent that effort? Why not just carry?

The J&G 64 will do almost anything that the 66 will do at half the cost, the +P ammo makes it a 357 standard load. The hot 357 loads most can't handle or hit anything with it. Here is a 64 from J&G that I cut down and it does great. When I travel it goes in the car and motel with meand the belt at gun shows.

If you have to leave a gun in the car, I would go with the Gun Lock Box. It can be bolted down along with the cable. I have one mounted in my car on days I go to court. It is faster than checking my gun in and out. I would never leave a gun overnight in a car. Some insurance companies like State Farm will not cover any losses to a vehicle if a gun was left alone.

Dryrider, just get another 66 or a 19 and shoot .38s in it.
A model 19 may rust, but it may take a few years
