Default S&W Model 686 21/2 barrel

Dear S&W Forists
I wish to know from those who own a 21/2 barrel Model 686 .357 Magnum sixshooter the shooting impressions of this gun, I am very interested in accuracy of this revolver at 25 and up to 50yds.
Does anybody have information regarding range test of this 21/2 barrel piece????, if you know please let me know.
Yours Sincerely
Roberto Renauld

If you can just hit the target at 50 yards with a 2 and a half inch barrel, let us all know

I have a M66 with a great DA trigger. I can stay in the black at 15 yards shooting DA off-hand and I can do the same at 25 yards shooting off the bench. I can't see the target at 50 yards but I can spray fiercely in its direction. Dennis

I usually shoot 6" groups at 100 yards offhand with my 2.5"686. If I put my beer down and use a two hand hold, I can usually get the group down to 4".

I use my 2.5" 357 for shooting ducks on the wing. I always shoot them in the head to avoid any loss of meat.
I do try and keep my shots inside 100 yds, not that I couldn't hit them but it makes for a long swim for my old lab.

I've done a lot of serious accuracy checking with the 2.5 686 and have come to the conclusion that it is just as accurate as any of the longer barrels. The problem is the short sight radius which makes it more difficult to shoot accurately at extended range. My 2.5 will shoot an inch at 25 yards from a good rest with either the superb Penn 158 SWC or their even greater 158 TC BUT it is harder to turn that intrinsic accuracy into practical accuracy from field positions than it would be if you were shooting a longer barrel.

Dear Mr Wayne M
As you say short barrel revolvers are accurate enough to shoot at 25yds and also 50yds, maybe further providing good rest, time and single action shooting with .357 Magnum.
As a handgun enthusiast when my eyes were young, 25 years old, I shot my fathers Colt Detective Special 2 inches barrel 38 Special consistently in the 8 and 9 zone at 50yds with little holdover, I knew very well that gun and shot with it very much!!!.. this was single action to handed hold standing with no resting bags.....
As I grew older I am 57 now my eyes are not so good for iron sights but I manage to do my best shooting with short barreled handguns, my eyes seem to like the closer distance between the front and rear sight, fortunately I still have a firm gripping hold of the handgun!!!...
Much Obliged

Dear Mr Michael Thornton and Forists

As I see in your recent post you shoot better groups with 21/2 inches barreled Model 686!!!!
I am trying to get more information of this handgun in 21/2 inches barrel in order to see if it fullfills my expectations therefore encourage meto buy a new Smith and Wesson 686 21/2 inches barrel.
I intend to use it at 25yds and enentualy at 50yds, as a home defense gun and a good range gun too, at the present time I own a Model 10-9 pencil barrel 4 inches barrel, fixed sights that shoots very consistent 3inches groups hands rested in sand sacks at 25yds, this with ordinary 158gr round nose lead ammo, now I purchased a box of Remington 148gr WC Target Match factory ammo, soon Iwill try this loas for accuracy at 25yds hand rested!!!!....
I would like to have adjustable sights and more punch than the .38 Special, a gun that will withstand extensive use of 158gr JSP/HP .357 factory Magnum ammo.
Any experience with the 21/2 barreled Model 686 will be wellcome!!!!!
Best Regards to yoy and Smith and Wesson Forists!!!!

As a retired LEO, we used to shoot the TRC & PPC with a 686 2.5 inch snubby. Those ranges were 50 & 60 yards. We shot silhouette type targets. The 686 snubby is only as accurate as the shooter himself. Practice is what makes-it. I currently carry the 686 snubby concealed. If you are not into law enforcement where somebody might shoot at you from a distance, keep in mind that about 80% of shootings are within 20 feet. Thats where you need to really concentrate for self defense type shooting. Bullseye targets are great for learning your front & rear sights at first.

Default Barrel length differences

The model 686 has an excellent reputation as an accurate gun, based on comments by owners at forums like this. I have two of them, the 2.5 inch you mentioned, as well as the longer 6 inch barrel gun.

I find that I can shoot more accurately at distance with the 6 inch gun, which I think is due to the longer sighting radius making it easier to aim, as well as the greater weight of the barrel keeping the gun steady. But the 2.5 inch gun does well in accuracy, given the limitations of the short sighting radius.

i carried a 686 2.5"for a long time...its a great shooter,it's weight really holds the recoil down....50 yards is probably asking a bit much however

Dear Forists
Thanks to all of you!!!!, I apreciate very much your posts regarding experience using this handgun.
There is one remainig doubt about this gun that I wish to ask you and this is the timing problems that have some recent S&W guns, I had trouble with a Model 27-7 after shooting 250 rounds of factory 158gr JSP ammo!!!!!
Do you know of users having any issues with De-timing!!!! in their Model 686 using 158gr JSP/SWC factory ammo
Regards
Roberto Renauld

I'm not aware of intrinsic timing problems but they are usually quickly and easily fixed with a different hand and/or bolt if you run into the odd revolver which has trouble.

I find that I can shoot more consistent groups by firing DA, and fairly rapidly. After the recoil from a shot, I let the revolver return to the initial POA, naturally. When it gets to that point, I pull the trigger again. I get tighter groups this way, then I do firing SA, taking a diliberate aim each time I fire.

I think that using SA, I tend to think too much, trying to align the sights. I'm not a target shooter by any stretch of the imagination. But, in self defense practice, shooting DA, I'm a little better. Bob

Markcuda,
Shooting at 50 yards with a 2 1/2 inch L Frame or K Frame is no big deal. In the CI School at the Treasury Academy (Fleatic aka FLETC) in 1979 we shot 2 1/2 inch 19s on a NRA 1500 course. Intresting as I thought I was a pretty good shot. I ended up second on qual day, a female IRS Investigator from Dallas beat me and everybody else. She shot a 298 and I shot a 297, but I had more Xs. She had red hair and I was scared of her.

Mr Rule 303

As you say shooting at 50yds with 21/2 inches barrel K frame is no big deal !!!!!
A friend of mine has a Model 66-3 21/2 inches barrel and it is very accurate out to 50yds and a 21/2 inches group shooter at 25yds!!!.
I dont know if the L frame Smiths in 21/2 inches barrel are so accurate shooting handguns as the old Model 66!!!
Oh those,good old days!!!!

Very nice!

I've got a 4' and I love it. I really like the looks of that snub. Hmmmm, I just might have to put one of those on the list.

I have a 2 1/2 inch 686,I haven't tried it at 50 yards yet but chasing some mutts out of my place a week back I can tell you I fired one shot at maybe 60 yards and it hit damn close to where I was aiming.

I'll see about trying it out when the weather clears a bit and I'll post it here.
