Default "PLUG" Thread

Ok guys, with all the cry babies on here about the lock, how many have the PLUG and like or not like what they have. I have tried to make everyone happy that I know about, but there is away a few that won't say anything. OK then as the song says "Give me your best shot".

John; As we had discussed recently, I installed a plug in my Smith. I had never had an IL failure, but, with the frequency that the failures take place, I was not going to take the chance. In a self defense situation a failure could be catastrophic...in a hunting situation a failure could result in the loss of that prized trophy, and, from what I have heard/read, in all situations you have a gun that is locked up with a loaded round in the chamber and a cocked hammer!!! You are performing a vital service to those that should be seriously considering "The Plug" and you efforts are to be commended....If nothing more, the cost of The Plug insures peace of mind, and possibly protects the Smith owner from a failure to fire when least expected!

My new 627 was "plugged" before it ever made it to the range.

A week later, my 686 got plugged:

If I get any more IL Smith's, a plug will follow shortly.

I've got one. I like it. If an old "bob wire" cowboy can do it, anyone can.

+1 for all that "flat top", "Iggy", and "epj" said.

I have plugs in the 640 and 686 and I love "The Plug". No worries! Pretty easy procedure to install "The Plug" and it is reversible surgery if one ever wants or needs to sell a revolver.

With "The Plug", owners of new S&W's at least have a choice to leave things alone or remove a potential cause of FTF (remote possibility or not). My firearms are always stored safely when not in use and an internal storage lock on a firearm is not necessary.

Thanks for making an excellent product at a reasonable price and for the excellent customer service (PM's, e-mail -- John will keep you up to date about your order).

Chris

I got one of the first J frame plugs. Never been sorry I did it. Looks great and removes a possible failure point, what's not to like?

Send a PM (private message) to Bullseye Smith and give him your e-mail address and/or your contact info. He takes PayPal and shipping is almost instantaneous. You must specify the frame for the plug (J-frame or an L/N frame) -- your 686 is an L-frame (as you probably know). Also, you can look in the Classifieds forum here and run a search for "PLUG" and you will find Bullseye Smith's thread.

HTH,

Chris

Here is how the pin fits, recoil will push it in and I had to take a pair of pliers to take it out. Easy in and pain to come out .

Those are the Cats pajamas John..
I notice that maybe you need to offer a brushed finish as many of the stainless ones stand out, I know that just rubbing it with a grey scotch brite would make them blend in..
I don't have a need for any YET, But have suggested them to many that have aquired the Newer Smiths expecialy on a carry weapon..
WAY TO GO!!

John If/When you get the mill setup I have a 642 cylinder that would love to be cut for full moon clips & chamber mouths beveled, all the rest I have are either 940s or 547s were either this can't be done or were factory with moon clips..
In fact this is the same 642 I fit a 940 cylinder too..
I'd have to aquire the Moon Clips from Ranch Products though..
I have the 38 cylinder sitting in a case.. Not Being used currently..

Just knowing that these "Plugs" are available will have me looking at "Newer" S&Ws for possible use in my small arsenal..
Smith owes you for that BTW..
I like the looks of that retention clip setup too..
Great piece of work..
Gary/Hk

I bought and installed 3; Models 60,617, & 686. The fit and finish is perfect and I couldn't be more pleased. These are my main "shooters" and although I never had a lock issue, it was a small price to pay to eliminate that possibility. Great product.

It is laser engraved so with some elbow grease and polish, it should be possible to remove the graffitti. I am going to give this a try in the next few weeks and will post up the results.

Do it by hand and don't press to hard or you may put a dip in it then it will be a tuff job. Take your time and press on .

I love mine. I just have one on my 617 as a trial and will get a couple more after Christmas. I just blended it in with a Scotchbrite pad which help get rid of the arrow and took the more polished look off the plug. A piece of cake.

I ordered two plugs, one for a J frame Blue and One for a 686 Stainless. I swear it couldn't have been two days when they came in the mail.

It took probably 15 minutes per gun and I cleaned the internals while I had it open. I believe the trigger pull may be even smoother but for sure the guns look so much better.

I did how ever mess up. Somehow I lost the old plug for my 686, you know how stuff disappears on the work bench, I would only ever need it if I sold the gun and someone wanted it back in. I understand S&W will not sell you a new one.
Oh Well, I am more than pleased with the plugs, great product.

Default works great

I installed a stainless plug in my 686P and a brushed aluminum plug in my 638 Airweight. Both fit well and look much better. I put all the old spare lock parts in little ziplocks in the blue S&W box in case I ever sell the guns. I ordered those little spring clips to install the plugs, but found it easier to install them using the little spring and fork that held the lock in place, so that's how I did it. I'm sure the spring clip works, but I was having a hard time pushing it into place and didn't want to slip and mess something up. They are secure and I feel more comfortable with the guns now. I still plan to take some photos and put them up on the web, but I don't want them to be fuzzy. When I can spend a few more minutes and get a good shot, I will post photos. Thanks Bullseye! This is really an ingenious and unique product that fills a need (and an ugly hole).

Thanks, B

OK...got a photo of the 686P with the plug...looks great. The 638 looks just as good, but I didn't photograph it today...I got some new holsters for Christmas and was taking photos of the guns, holsters and plugs out in the back yard. Thanks Bullseye!

I notice your picture has no snow in it. That's nice, as where marching in it over here. Cold and ****** outside, I miss my motorcycle.....

I also notice a dirty gun , what all that polishing compound under your rear sight! YUCK

I agree, it does look better than a black eye on the side.

This statement below is not directed at you but as a general thought to the removal operation. I do this thing too when approached, but in a different way, yet the same problem remains. As a complaint to the lock design: It's too bad other than a lot of cosmetic work in sanding/polishing the frame, that the chamfer of the hole remains. The famous arrow and "L" is there as a permanent reminder of what your trying to remove. Then if you would take it down completely where all of this is gone, the ring still shows. No way to fix it perfectly, unless it is welded up.

If you or I would weld it up, then refinish it, you kill your resale value and warrantee. It is what it is, I guess. No solution to make it look pre-lock. Rant off

I never noticed that until you mentioned it - the photo is a close up in natural light. Yep, I had the Mother's Mag Polish out a few months ago and went over the entire gun. It's not like a mirror yet, but I figured I could do a little at a time. I read your post about covering the laser etched logo, so I'm trying not to polish that away. Next time I get that gun out I'm going to clean that polish out of there - reminds me of when I was a teenager and waxed my first car - I had remnants of wax in every crevice.

I agree with what you said on the lock...I plan to buy "pre-lock" from now on. My favorite carry gun is a 640-1 with no lock.

Later, B

It's funny because I do the same darn thing most of the time. It's like I'm so focused on the improvement that your blind to the fingerprints or hairs on the gun. Yep, I had a big brown ugly eyelash? on a perfectly centered and focused picture once, had to redo it after I discovered it. Boy, was I ticked off!

Mike a little tip is to take a clean tooth brush and go over the gun after the fact. The place I screw up and forget is the cylinder holes .

I was asked about the flag replacement and I haven't found what I'm looking for that is safe and isn't SCREWED-UP on looks. Plus I have worked on the small hole that the "J" frame has with no good results. Some one has a idea PM me with it and maybe it will get the wheels turning ( they are only flat on one side LOL).

My hammer and trigger look the same as all the others, but the way the sun was hitting it may have caused it to look different. When I used some Mother's Mag Polish on the gun, I also hit the hammer and trigger with it, so that may have cleaned them up a little, but not much. I did clean the guns a couple of days ago and they are immaculate. Someone mentioned the dried polish under the rear sights...I got that all out and it is shining once again. Later, B

To install, while I'm sure it's not the way previously posted to install I personally first installed the plug. Then I aligned the $1 spring as shown in the 1st picture. Lastly, I used a screwdriver or to gain more leverage use a needle nose pliers and then pushed the spring in place. The $1 spring works well and the plug isn't going anywhere.

installed

Note: in order for the polished stainless steel plug to match the satin stainless finish on the above model 60 and 640, I personally used a wire wheel instead of a kitchen scorching pad as the kitchen scorching pad was taking too long.

In short, I couldn't be happier. Looks factory. I'd buy again. hope this helps

Default Love it!

The plug is just right on my 60. Had to tap the spring clip in place after struggling with it for about 15 minutes. Put the blade of a large screwdriver against the rounded end of the clip and a few light taps did it. Pulled the whole lock assembly out.

John,

I thank you again for your work creating "The Plug". I'm very happy with the product. Of course, I hope the product becomes unnecessary because S&W stops putting that ridiculous lock in their revolvers.

This is a GREAT product!!!! I have done my own 357PD .41 Magnum, my friend's two 325 carry guns and another friends 60-15 .357 3". Other than getting the clip onto the Plug in the 60-15 all were pretty easy to do. The recess in the 60-15 was very small and the clip took some "persuasion" to get on...
