Default WVSP stainless 357??????

Hello all, This is my first time here. I am curious about the above mentioned gun. I have one that my wife bought quite a few years ago. She used to be a law enforcement officer with the National Park Service. She bought this because it was identicle to her service revolver. I can not find a model number on it. The serial number is listed as WVSP7XX (left the last 2 numbers out) It has the West Virginia State Police logo stamped into the frame. Can anyone tell me how old this is and what model it is. Any idea what they are worth. It is in excellent shape with Pacmyer grips.

Thanks for any help
Mike Kise

This is a Model 686. It was an issued sidearm to the West Virginia State Police.

Thanks for the help with that. Any ideas on how much it is worth??? I am trying to get any idea on all the guns I have so I can insure them. I know it is a fickle market, but I have never seen another for sale.

Mike,
If you open the cylinder and look just above it's hinge point you will find the model number. As clang444 said, it is a 686.

Also the number that you posted is not the revolvers serial number, that is the WVSP property number. The serial number will either be below the model number or in the butt of the firearm. The Pachmayr grippers that are mounted on the revolver hide that second possible serial number location.

As to value for insurance purposes, that depends on if you have a current value policy or a replacement value policy. You would probably have to spend $650 plus sales tax to buy a new one. A current value policy would probably give you $300 for the loss.

To determine age, we would have to know the at least part of the real serial number. Mine was manufactured in 1987.
