Model 21-4 .44 Special
Hi all
I had something to do in a city near our home. After all the
business was done, I took the time to look in gunshop, that
I visit not very much.
I asked about the S&W they got in stock, new and used. On
used one. Only new stuff with the lock. The last blue plastic-
box that he opens was surprise. A really wonderfull made
Model 21-4 with the small woodgrips and THE LOCK.
The action is very very smooth, the timing and cylinderplay
perfect........the price is steep. ca. US$ 1250.-- This in
combination with the lock is to much for a good deal. But i
understand if somebody buy this beauty with the fixed sight.

I have had two of the 21-4s but sold-traded them. They are very nice revolvers but my 71+ year old eyes could not shoot well with the fixed sights. Had the been fitted with adjustable sights it would have been nearly impossible to let them go.

I have the 21-4 Thunder Ranch. Its very nice, much nicer than most of the current crop of IL revolvers I have seen. I disabled the lock on mine, and with the deep blue finish the hole is almost invisible. It would still look better without the IL hole and MIM parts, but its a great gun. $1250 is really steep though, I paid $500 for mine NIB.

The price is steep, but then again I do not live in Switzerland! I have the M21-4 TR and the M-22-4, both are great guns! I dont think the lock to be a problem in a steel N frame.

I've got a 21-4 in nickel. Replaced the factory grips with some S&W laminate combats and it is my go-to gun when I'm going hunting. Hot handloads and a real joy to shoot.

Zwillingen
These are my twins: 21-4s, TRS1113 to front, TRS0666 to rear. Wonderful revolvers, true favorites!
$1250 is quite high. That was the suggested retail of these Thunder Ranch versions. I purchased 0666 new at $700. 1113, used, cost $500. Of course, due to duties and taxes, any American product sold on the Continent likely doubles in cost so, in your location, $1250 is "reasonable".
If you do purchase a 21, be sure to obtain a ladenschein. Factory patronen are very expensive.

My 21-4 is the only IL S&W I own. It is also one of the most accurate revolvers I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot over the years. MIM parts and IL criticisms aside, it has a spectacular action--over 1K rounds fired and barely a turn ring. Just a great revolver and a pleasure to shoot.

I carry one 24/7 (CCW). With 200gr Silvertips it is one of the most accurate revolvers I have ever owned. I never feel out gunned. Don't worry about the fixed sights or the lock.

My 21-4 was without a doubt the most accurate pistol, revolver or bottom feeder, that I have ever fired.

Hello zzclancy,
I'm very fond of the .44 S&W Special and - for cc - I use a 696. Could you please let me know, how do you manage to carry a 24-7 with its 6-shot cylinder and the rather bulky N-Frame; is it perhaps a "three - incher"?
I carry - due to German law - only while hunting and with the usual
clothes cc never has been a problem. Please let me know your secret because I would really love to own a 6-shot .44 Special !
Best regards

I used to carry 5" M27 concealed in a pancake holster. I have a M21-4 coming in next week and will probably carry it the same way. If you have a good double thickness gun belt and a good holster that will distribute the weight you can carry an N frame pretty comfortably.

Richtig! You quote Cooper exactly!!
For what it is worth, I carried a Ruger Redhawk when hunting Schwarte. We lost two jaegers in my kreis to them during the few years I was privileged to hunt in Deutschland. I used a blockbeuchse, so the revolver was a bit more useful when on the ground with them.
The Model 21 was not available at that time. Even if it was, I feel better using a Magnum to approach wounded game. Of course, the 21 or 696 is a good choice if one can only have a single hand gun for both personal defense and hunting.

I 2nd that! (altho I just got a second IL revolver). I love the fixed sighted guns, and this one shoots!

I have sometimes wondered which S&W was the most accurate, but I guess my question is answered. On every model-specific thread, there are several responders reporting that that model / caliber is the most accurate gun they have ever owned!

Hello Jaeger,
I'm sorry but I've opned p your post a little late. First of all, all the best and a happy new year!
In the eigthies me and my father had our own Revier (hunting area) and there were quite a lot of hogs. I'm very fond of my Drilling which has been manufactured in Suhl and was rather successful with it. When on the ground with those black fighting hogs I had a Model 629 loaded with Remington JSP ( for penetration, I do not use Hollow Points) Im not that tall (5.7), therefore a four inch barrel is comfortable to carry, but the gun is rather heavy when carried a whole day long - and in my area there are not so many shooting ranges where you are allowed to practice with .44 magnum.
So i changed to .357 (686, 3") and the 696, the latter being my favorite handgun, because the bullet "lets out a lot of blood and in a lot of air".
Could you please let me know the calibre you did use in your Blockbuechse ? (Was it perhaps a Ruger or Heym Ruger ?)
Many of my younger co hunters do not believe that hogs may be rather dangerous when wounded and feel that the stories are exaggerated.
This feeling comes to an end when they have there first search on and contact with wounded game....
If it would be possible, now I would by a 629 mountain gun , or a mountain gun in normal steel, either in .44 magnum or .45 Colt (perhaps you did guess - I am very fond of big bore rifles and handguns). But as far as I know, S & W does not come up with a new mountain gun series. To practice, I would use .44 Special and have a rather lighweight and compact gun to carry.
Thanks for posting, best regards
Wisent

S & W Model 21-4
After reading Swissman's post I checked the Blue Book for the 21-4. The price range 60% = $600 - 100% = $2,950, first impression $1,250 for an average 21-4 seems to be a fair price for a stateside purchase and a steal for purchasing abroad. Please tell me where I have gone wrong with this assumption.
