Default S&W in a Pawn Shop ??

I found a nice model 10-5, serial number D51937 with good finish except for right above the trigger guard on the left side where a spot is all bare metal about the size of my little finger nail. Price is about 350. Can someone help me with the date of manufacture and an opinion of the value of the gun? It is very tight with a great bore, etc. Grips are nice as well.

The DOB is 1968 for that gun if you have all the digits in the serial number. I have my Dad's 6 inch 10-5 from 1968 with serial number D58173

The SN puts it at 1968. As for the price, $350 sounds to me a little high for a Model 10 with a spot of finish missing. But if it looks good to you otherwise, and you like the configuration (barrel length , barrel weight, grips) then for $350 you'll get a classic gun that will last you the rest of your life.

Price is a bit on the high side,
But these days, Well you never know.
I would think that ou could pick up one for just above 300 right here on the forum classifieds.
But if you love it, Get it and you will spend years shooting it and having a great time.

Picked up my 10-5 at auction earlier this year for $350. Thought I overpaid at the time but it was in great shape and I wanted a good range friend. Glad I went for it-love the gun.

I agree with the guys. $350.00 is to high. The description sounds like a shooter and not a collector. I would not give more than $300.00 for a model 10. I passed on a pre-10 made in the 1930s. The shop wanted $249.00 and the condition was at 75%.
I would see if the pawn shop will go down.

Good luck,

Sounds like a pawn shop price - offer $200. There are more model 10's floating around than anything else. Blue wear sounds like it has ridden in a holster for a period of time.

I really appreciate the input. It helps clear up my thinking. As you all know, when you are in a shop and actually holding a nice gun, logic often takes a vacation. I have learned the hard way to bounce things off of other people. I will visit the shop again and make the lower offer. Who knows?!
