Model 581
Just got a model 581. I know its just the fixed sight/duty style L-frame. Are there any other points to know about these bad boys? Recalls etc? Still pretty new to the forum, but I have a real love of old blued smith's (granddaddy was a cop for 35 years, got out before stainless )

You need to know its a great gun and a lot of fun to shoot. And congratulations. And look at page one (fourth post, I think) of the FAQs for information on the L frame recall. And do a search for something like "L frame recall" and you'll find out lots of info and opinions, including some of mine, and I just bought my 6th L frame no-dash today. Post the first three letters of the serial number and we'll give you the year of manufacture if you're interested.

I've got the 586, same as yours but with the adjustable sights. they are workhorses as far as I understand them. would love to get my hands on a utility version 581 too.

Don't knock it...they are truly a great firearm. If it's a no-dash or a dash one you should reference the recall info. per the previous posts. I'll also point out that really clean 581's are not all that easy to come by in my experience.

You're lucky to get a 581.
We found a total of one 581 in our travels over the years, and we were out of state and didn't have a home FFL available, so we had to let it go. The wife was PO'd about that. I told her to be grateful she has a 586 no dash. It has a better trigger than her 1968 Colt Python:
I don't know why the 581 is so darn rare, but they are. I'd love to have one.

Does anyone know why the 581 is so rare? Was it aimed at the LEO market and just didn't get a chance since the switch to autos was coming or did they just not market them well from the factory? I personally tend to prefer fixed sight, blued, working guns. And that philiosophy is kind of what built Wayne Novak's shop up lol, but I guess I came along way too late to matter in that field lol. Guess I'm the last of a dying breed or something,

Actually, since I thought about it, I do know why: The 581 was mostly a service revolver, and only produced from 1980-1988, only 8 years and just in time to be replaced by semi-autos. The 586 was made much longer, from 1980-1999, and with its adjustable sight, is a great target gun.
