What Is a 627-0 Model of 1989 Worth?
Just traded into a really nice looking S&W 627-0 serial # BEK38XX. Caliber is .357 and it is stamped Model of 1989. Gun has been fired but it appears not very much. Does the 1989 mean this was the year of manufacture? Dry fired it just once in single action and once in double action (using snap caps) and it is the best trigger and smoothest action I have ever seen. I also really like the checkered topstrap...very nice! Would like to sell for cash as I just can't afford to keep it but don't have any idea what a fair price to ask would be. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks! Art G.

Is it the gun by itself, or do you have the box, tools and papers? I would think the gun by itself would go for about $650 or so. With box and papers about $100 more. That estimate is about $100 to $150 less than a year ago, as I think values have softened. It is a very, very nice gun and I like them a bunch. About 5400 were made, so they are not really rare. They come up for sale here occasionally.

627-0
Richard: Thank you for taking the time to fill me in on my 627-0. I appreciate the information. When I acquired this gun my intention was to turn around and sell it for cash. However, it really is talking to me to keep it. Thanks again, Art G.

627-0
Here's a picture of my 627-0. I have seen these sell for $700 on up.

They have one of these in a local shop near me. Asking price is $650 complete with the original shopworn box. This gun also comes with a bonus hole. Some fool decided to drill a "view hole" through the recoil shield. The gun salesman was touting this as a custom feature, so that one could see if there was a loaded round in the next chamber to be carried up to the firing position. I simply cringed!
While I'm not a fan of unfluted cylinders, I do like that 5.5" barrel length. These guns are a bit of a tank-like platform for shooting .357 Mags.

I have decided to keep mine and look forward to trying it this weekend. Besides the better than average trigger I really like the look of the checkered top strap. Overall an interesting gun that I was previously unaware of. Art G.

Art g: Most of these that I have handled had the floating hand in them. If they work right, great. Most of the ones I have handled have a hitch in double action shooting. Since I shoot mostly double action, I replace the floating hand with a regular hand. I have one and have bought one for each of my sons. I think you will like it a lot.

I bought one new in 89 and it's absolutely the finest .357 I could hope to shoot. Totally overbuilt, hand checkered, accurate as a laser.
I got a round to square GA grip from Hogue as I can't abide by a round butt on any revolver over 3".

I would go 800 for one in good shape that had wood grips. Maybe a 100 more with box. These are at least the prices here in ca.

Necro-thread revival. Saw one at my LGS. NOt abused, but lots of usage scratches. Mechanics are tight. No original grips or box. $700.
I walked away since it was about $150 over my personal value limit, but I now hear they are somewhat uncommon.
Is $700 on the high side for a nice shooter grade model?

Well, there is one in like new condition with box and papers listed on Gunbroker now for a starting price of $2500. Several have been listed for $1800 starting in the last month or so. I don't know if they sold at that price and all were complete packages. Plain shooter at $700 may not be too bad, especially in California.
There were just over 5200 627-0s made in the late 80s and early 90s. The 1989 is the model number and not necessarily when they were made.

Smith & Wesson did something really right with these 627-0s. I'm in the SF Bay Area and picked both up "locally" (within 100 miles) for $875 within the last few years. One with Box...one without. Combats on both are stunning. $2500 is ridiculous and about half that would be my limit if I was going to go for the hat trick.
Enjoy...

November 1989.
One thing I find interesting about these is it's not a "no dash". It was literally stamped with a "-0". Which is, when you think about it, kind of odd.
Most MODELS OF 1989's were M625 in .45 ACP. But there were some in .45 Colt too, and also some M25's, M629's and M627's. Probably others as well.
The oldest one I've seen was a M625-6 dated January 25, 2002. S&W must of retired the M9 model name when the lock came out. The M9 is a great revolver, would love to have one.
There was also a MODEL OF 1988 that was essentially identical, but had a black ramp instead of a Patridge front sight.

I bought one of these when they first came out. A great gun. I loved it and vowed never to sell it. But I did several years ago for $700.00. Still regret it. I'd keep it.

I tried buying one on GunBroker a year or so ago. It was in very good but not mint condition and I don't recall what extras came with it. I bid it to $1,200 in several auctions without breaking the seller's reserve and finally went to $1,300 without winning it so I bid another seller's minimum of $1,400 for a 1 of 500 5" unfluted 686-3 National Match instead. In hindsight, I'm glad I made that decision.
If I could buy a nice 627-0 for $1,200, I probably would go for it.
By the way, if I'm not mistaken, there was a 627 no-dash AND the 627-0. There was some sort of change made between the two that I can't recall without referring to my SCoSW - perhaps the 5.5" barrel and "Model of 1989" markings?

The -0 engineering revision corrected this with a larger bolt and obviously correspondingly larger stop notches in the cylinder.

Why didn't they just call it a -1, and are there any other models that used the -0 designation?

I just sold one recently. It was a European model with German markings and papers. Box and a Roy Jinks letter. I had some offers in the $1500.00 range, but sold it for 1700.00. Best handling N frame I ever experienced. I'll take a wheel barrow load for 700.00 a piece.

Great thread, in terms of describing appreciation in value from the date of the OP on 12-28-2009
I would be buying all I could find for $7-800 these days!

KC, duly noted- like I said, in simpler terms, that is a steal at $700.

Gryff, get that gun, and if you don't like it you can easily get your money back, and then some. We will be expecting photos asap.
