Default 3" 586-4

I just picked up a 3" 586-4. How many of these were made?

If it's the PC version, the L comp, and is prelock with 3" and powerport, I think 200 were made. There was a second batch made for Camfor as well a few years later on with the lock I believe.

I have one of the prelock 586 L Comps but can't find a picture unfortunately.

It's pre-lock, 3" with a BRU-4XXX serial number and is not ported. It has Houge grips and appears to only have burn rings on ever other chamber.

I think those are extremely hard to find as well, I've never seen one for sale.

Sweet, I am trying to decide which of these TALO models to purchase for occasional concealed carry duty to relieve my Glock 19. The .357 mag with 3" barrel delivers about the same muzzle energy as a 4" barrel 9mm +P (400-450 ft-lbf), while the the .44 mag from a 3" barrel delivers about 600 ft-lbf.

Which of these two do you find most accurate at the range? Is there a great deal of difference in felt recoil with the 629. I believe the 686 is an L frame, and the 629 an N frame - any difference that you can feel in heft/handling? What do you recommend? Thanks for the pics.

KoiBoy:

For concealed carry I would choose the 686+. It is slightly smaller and holds 7 rounds of .357. The 125gr JHP .357 has always been regarded as the best 1-shot mansopper ever. Recoil with the 3 inch full lug barrel is manageable and the balance is fantastic.

The .44 mag is good for bears not not a great defensive round on humans. .44 special is much better in that regard. It is well balanced also but recoil is a bit much with magnums and pretty mild with specials.

That being said, they make such a nice pair that you really should get both

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate the help. I have a couple more questions for you:

You say that the 686 is a little smaller than the 629 - could you elaborate? Is it because the frame on the 629 is larger and the wheel is larger? I can't tell from your picture because the 686 is closer to the camera, but it appears that the the barrel is shorter on the 629 and the hammer rides higher off of the frame? Any other differences you have noticed regarding build on the two?

Sorry to bother but I am still trying to make up my mind between the two - even though I'd like to follow your lead and buy both!

This link has some info comparing N & L & J frame sizes:

Smith

I have a 2.5" Ruger Alaskan...I just bought a 3" 686+ (TALO) to replace it as my home defense & sometimes carry gun. If I hand-loaded ammo, I might go with a 44, since I could load it to a level I would be comfortable shooting - but I don't, and full load 44 mags are too much blast for me to feel confident - and the ammo costs too much and hurts too much for me to practice the way I want. If I had unlimited funds, I'd buy both TALOs...but the real world intrudes on my desires sometimes!

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about energy in a self defense round. From what I've read, the real standard is can it reliably penetrate 10-15 inches. If so, the bigger the hole (diameter) the better, provided you can shoot it accurately. The 45 ACP, IMHO, has about the perfect defense ballistics - a 45 bullet weighing 200 grains plus moving 850-950 fps. But I hate shooting semi-autos, and 44 ammo is too expensive, so I use the 357 - and often load it with 38+P ammo. The Buffalo Bore 38+P has ballistics very similar to many 357 'SD' loads...

Default 4 inch cs 1 partridge front sight

I bought a 686 cs 1 years ago new in the box. It came with a patridge front sight that i thought at the time was kind of odd. Is that a normal sight that would come wth this model of Smith?

The weight/balance of the 3" is very near ideal IMO. Kind of coincidental, I was just at my local shop pondering a 3" 686+.

I posted a really bad pic of my 386 earlier in the thread, here is a slightly better one.
