686 Holster For Competition
I have recently purchased a like new Model 686-3 4-inch barrel. I am interested in finding a holster for competition. I haven't decided which competition yet. IPSC, IDPA, or I-CORE, could I possibly find a holster to use in more than competition? Thanks. http://smith-wessonforum.com/images/...s/rolleyes.gif

Kydex material is the most popular material for competition holsters. The top names are Bladetech and Comp-tac. Cost should be in the $60 to $70 range. Check out their websites.
The Kydex holsters don't compare to a beautifully crafted leater holster, but they afford a quicker draw, and speed is the name of the game when it comes to competition. While they are fast they are very secure, and could be used for hunting, although I prefer my hunting holsters to have a strap to hold the gun secure. Get one that is legal for IDPA, and it will also be legal for USPSA/IDPA and ICORE.

Check Dillion Precision, they had some nice holsters along with Midway and Brownells.

I use a Safariland 568-09 for my 686. MSRP $51.50
It is approved for competition, and ideal for IDPA and ICORE.

If you get one, put the paddle inside your pants, not just over the belt. Solid and stable.

I'm partial to Comp-Tac holsters...good stuff, great people to deal with. They make a holster for the L frame with the 6 shot cylinder. I wish they made one for the 7 shot.

IDPA 586/686 Holster
I have been happy with my Fobus 586/686 4" barrel holster for IDPA. Not fancy but does the job well.

Comp-Tac put a holster for the 686 in their line a couple months ago. Their website shows availability for the 586/686 6-shot 4".
I have kydex belt holsters (IDPA purpose primarily) for a 4" 625 full lug from both Blade-Tech and Comp-Tac. The Blade-Tech is not satisfactory; much more like a bucket than a holster. The Comp-Tac for the 625 is much more satisfactory, being well constructed and plenty fast, while retaining well.
The lining that Safariland uses tends to slow the draw until liberally soaked with spray silicone. Fobus holsters are not known for being very fast.

I am glad Comp-Tac has started making revolver holsters.
Myself and a good many shooters I know use Talon tactical holsters for competition. Talon Tactical - Holsters

ab4ka,
The 6 and 7 shot cylinders are the same size on the 686, so the holsters will be the same. I swap switch between a 6 and 7 shot cylinder on my 6 inch 686 for shooting USPSA and steel. USPSA only allows six and the extra shot is nice on steel.
