Default Model 27-3 Stocks and Value Question

A buddy was telling me about a 98% 4 inch 27-3. No box or papers. He said it has perfect magnas, but according to the 3rd ed. of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson in 1980, target stocks were standard. I do not want to offend him by asking to take the right stock panel off to see if there is a matching serial number on it. I assume they were still stamping the serial numbers on the right stock panels on the early to mid 80's non P and R revolverers. I have seen this on some of my 80's K frames with magnas, but I do not own an N frame to check. Anyone know if a 27-3 should have magnas?

Any idea of a fair going rate for this jewel? He has not shot it, but I have yet to shoot an N frame in .357 that did not shoot well. I like pretty guns, but I like to shoot 'em too and she seems to fit the bill. Thanks

Is this a Blue or Nickle gun?

I have three 27-3's from this era, two are nickle, one is blue. I bought them when they were near new and as I recall they all have Target Stocks as well as red ramp and white outline sights.

If the gun is blue, and in shot, but fairly good condition without the box, I'd think that a price in the $500 range would be correct. Maybe $550 if nickle.

The seller shoundn't kick too badly about checking the stocks.... particularly of you are respectful in your request and gentle is removing them.... Heck, he may want to know himself!

In 1980 the Magnas may or may not be numbered. Kinda hit or miss from that era.

Good Luck!

Drew

Thanks for the response, I should have mentioned the 27-3 is blue. (I see so few N frames for sale locally anymore, very few nickle ones especially.) He is talking like 700 bucks for the gun, maybe I better keep looking.

Default 27-3 Value.

Lest I be chastised before my peers I will say that there are those that would pay alot more for this gun than me.... as I said, I already have 3 of the 4" 27-3's.

Just remember that it's gonna cost you $75-100 to put a nice set of N-Frame Goncalo Target Stocks on this gun if that's the way you want it.

$700 may be a good starting point as far as the seller is concerned, and if you went to a larger gunshow or scanned the internet I'm sure you'll see asking prices such as that for guns such as this. But when it gets right down to the nut-cutting, and money changes hands, I'll bet the number is closer to $500 than $700.

Unless of course you're behind the Iron Curtain in California.... then all bets are off.
