Default Collecting.....

I just had another talk with my parters at work on this subject. What does collecting really means? I like to shoot and carry S&W revolvers. And I have special interest in three inch 38/357 STAINLES S&W revolvers. ( Got 4 of them) . I also have Glocks, 1911's , Beretta's , German PPK's that I carry on and off duty and shoot. According to my friends I am a GUN COLLECTOR.

How many guns are required to be considered a collection? It's pretty subjective. Four is a good start. I think of collectors as having a specialized interest (like 3" .357's) and acquiring many examples of slight variations thereof.

Prior to my gun collecting days, I collected tools to use. That was more work than fun as I got older. So I turned to collecting and shooting guns as a hobby.Nothing in particular, mostly older S&W blued revolvers, a few rugers, some military rifles.I prefer to call it accumullecting. So I'm an accumullector. Some consider me a gun-nut.

To me, collecting means something along these lines--Come up with a list of firearms you would like to have and work your way down the list until you own them all. The more you collect, the more you are likely to keep adding new "desirables" to the list and potentially removing others from the list, which you initially thought you really wanted.

I separate my collection into four discrete categories: handguns (revolvers and semi-autos), assault rifles, shotguns, and bolt action rifles. My collection has a bunch of different makes (HK, Sig, FN, Walther, S&W, Springfield, Colt, Bushmaster, IzhMash, Arsenal, Remington, AI, etc.). In other words, I don't discriminate against any particular types of firearms or manufacturers.

My friend is hunter ( He makes really good money and goes to Africa, Argentina etc to hunt.) He has a case with about 20 high dollar hunting rifles with some top of the line optics). He reads about hunting rifles. Some of His rifles are form the 50's and some are modern. He hunts with them and shoots them at the range. He only owns a couple of handguns. I guess He is a hunting rifle collector?

I think this is the key. When you start seeking out items of a particular type or theme, you step into the realm of collector.

I gave up and started thinking of myself as a collector when I decided to acquire a representative sample of S&W models M-10 through M-29 (or the pre-model equivalent). I now have at least one of each of those.

Is that how it's supposed to work? I'm doing it all wrong. I guess my style is more reminiscent of the movie "The Jerk"

"All I need is this 686 and this 442, and this 17"
"..and that's all I need."
"Oh, and this 637."
"The 686, 442, 17, 637 ... and the 19"
"And that's all I need. I don't need one more..."

"I need this!"

I consider myself an addicted accumulator. But since 50% of my "accumulation" is S&W's, some say I am a collector. But since I "accumulate" S&W for 1858 to the early 80's, that's too broad a spectrum to say I am a collector. It's just whenever I see a S&W that fits in my broad range of years (1858 to 1986), I get urgings that I must have a representative copy of such a revolver. However, occasionally I fall for a rifle or shotgun of some other make. Do I have a "problem"? Is there a 12 step program? (I did buy a gun per month last year, does that count?)

You should drink lots of coffee and smoke cigarettes to relieve the anxiety. There is a step by step method for your problem. Step one is to determine what gun you need most......buy it and apologize to ten friends for you addition. Only then can you come to the Dark side and meet your destiny

To get the tag collector is easy and is anyone who seeks a certain item or model and owns 3 or more .To get to gun nut is what you should strive for, when you have to use a spread sheet to keep track and it takes a weekend and two of your buddys to clean them all thats when you know you have made it

I don't think I am a true collector because I won't own a gun I can't shoot. I have jokingly said I am a "collector of shooters", but serious collectors don't consider me one of them. I have a number of guns of different makes in the safe but on here my preference is N-frames, 44 Specials & 5-screws, generally in that order unless something interesting comes along that doesn't fit in any of those categories.
