Default New & Confused -- snubbie question...

I'm pretty new to the S&W family and I have a question that I haven't found an answer to. I recently bought a new scandium snubbie and I'm confused on Smith's model numbers. (I'll try to post pics..)

The gun is a DAO and is stamped as a 360. I thought the 360's all had hammers and the 340's all had Centennial frames. In fact, I thought I was buying a 340 at the time and was surprised when I got home (put my reading glasses on ) and actually looked at the model number. It really doesn't matter to me, I got the gun I wanted, but I'm just trying to learn and I'm sure this is the place to get the straight info...

Thanks for the help...!!!

hmmmm, I know in the past it was not unheard of for model numbers to be stamped wrong, especially since they were stamped and not computer laser etched. I would guess its just a typo.

That IS odd. Unless something has changed that I have not heard of (but I dont keep up much with the newest.) It looks like they put a 360 crane on your 340. Did you get a box?

edit: duh that's the frame though. Mis-marked models have been seen before from s&W.

Its mismarked, the 340 is the concealed hammer, the 360 is the exposed hammer version. Kind of neat actually, makes it somewhat unusual.

Good question. I forgot that detail. Yes, the gun was NIB and the label on the box matches the serial number on the gun. It lists the gun as an M360.

I simply do not know enough about S&W's to know if they make a DAO 360 but I didn't think so. I'm hoping folks on here can fill in the blank spots in my knowledge base...

No, you have a mismarked gun. The 360 definatly has an exposed hammer.
Product: Model 360 Revolver

Kinda neat really. I think it is interesting that not only is the gun mis-marked but so is the box.

I wonder if there is a wholesale price difference. I mean, somewhere there is a retailer who thought he was ordering a 360, got a box and gun labeled 360, but really got a 340. If there was a price difference, I would be pissed.

I'm glad you got the gun you wanted regardless of the markings.

Not worth anything extra, but it does give you bragging rights here on the forum!

Interesting that the box also said 360. It would be interesting to get a letter from S&W. Did you get a mis-marked 340 or a mis-made 360?

Thanks folks... You answered my questions. I quess someone made a set up going from 360 frames to 340 frames and forgot to change the stamper or something.

Now I'm wondering if the factory records show it as a 340 or a 360. Based on the box label I would assume they recorded it as a 360. Maybe I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say..

Tell them you'd be glad to return their example of poor QA for a replacement model 360 AND 340 ;-)

I like the way you think...!!! Seems fair since I kind of have parts of both but not all of either one...
