Default S&W M66 F-Comp PC

My early birthday present has arrived.

The wait and a long search was over !!!
For over 2 years that I was looking for one of the K-frame F-comp from S&W performance center. Because it was so hard to find, I was nearly getting other 66's or 65's instead, so many times.

At the end, finally it's here, I have her right in front of me. I'm so excited.

Here are some of the pictures of hers, S&W Performance Center M66 F-Comp ............

beautiful, either the Fcomp 66 or k comp 19 are on my short list for 2010. I just have to find one and hope I can afford it. I think I would really rather have the 19 but definately wouldnt pass up the 66. great find.

Really nice, and looks to be in great shape. Have you shot it? Do you find the porting helps to control the gun? BTW, where did you find it?

Maxicooper, for trilijon night sights that are on my gun and on that flyer I posted, go here. I think you can drift your front sight out and send it to them without the gun, they can do the job and you will have the exact same thing.

Thank you. It is in excellent shape.

I haven't got a chance to shoot it yet, not until next week. The range near my place was closed for remodeling.

I got it from the seller, who responsed to my WTB post in the local shooters forum. It comes complete with original PC case, manual, keys, etc.

I'm so happy, it's been a long while that I was looking around for the gun.

Nice catch. Glad to see you got one you wanted.
I saw one of these in a local shop yesterday. Comes with wood and rubber grips and some kind of soft case. They had it marked $799.
They also had a 327 PC 8 shot with PC case. Said it can use moon clips. Had it marked $899. The 327 did not have the lock.
I don't know about those prices and not really my cup of tea but they are very nice guns.

I've always thought this was a neat variation, but wondered if you get a muzzleflash from the ported barrel? I think the 3" barrel is optimal for carry and is still long enough for good accuracy. What I really like about the Performance Center guns is that they use forged hammer and triggers as opposed to MIM ones. This 3" 66 is the closest I've come to your F Comps.

I bought mine nov of 1997. With tax and whatevers I see mine came to $664.66. Thats more than I ever paid for another gun includeing colt single actions and pythons! I was/am under the impression that mine was 1 of 300 made for lew horton, as it came with that paper I posted earlier on this thread. Right after I bought mine I seen one more identical one for sale at a different nearby gunshop in california. But then, I dont get out much. Mine is done by the performance center and is a 66-3 with serial # 088. Also has PCP 0141. On mine I have nice wood grips and not the uncle mikes stated on the advertisement. This gun feels perfect in the hand!

I believe, the first run of F-Comps for Lew Horton along with the limited run of 250 (or so) for the American Historical Foundation (which were full scroll-engraved, ruling out yours as being one), were the only F-Comps without the lock. Someone more smart than me, please confirm/deny this. (Don't trust my memory anymore in my old age...)

If this is true, and your's does not have the lock, I think you are right.

Default Outside of the American Historical Foundation run....

There were at least two other early production runs. The first, in 1993, used a S/N prefix of PCPxxxx) and the second, in 1995, used a LHFxxxx serial number prefix.
The first run was on the M66-3 engineering change, while the second one was on the M66-4 engineering change.
It's my recollection that the American Historical Foundation guns were from the later run, on the M66-4 engineering change.
Here are a couple pics showing the two versions, the external differences basically relate to the markings; laser etching vrs. roll marking.
Note also that in the standard production line, the -4 engineering change introduced the new rear sight assembly, but the PC had migrated to that in the -3 engineering change.

M66-3
\

M66-4

Note that the guns above are wearing Spegel Boot Grips instead of the original Eagles or rubber grips from the factory.

I have to go back and research, but the second run was definitely a Lew Horton exclusive, however the first run may have been done for the Stocking Dealer program, if I am incorrect in this, then both were sent to Lew Horton.

Enjoy

First day at the range with my 66 F-Comp, I'm so excited.

I loves the feel of the gun. DA trigger pull is so smooooooth, SA is very crisp.

Using Win .38 spl 125 gr jhp +p and PMC .357 mag 150 gr. Starfire. Good result, and surprisingly that I didn't feel that much different in recoil from both rounds. Recoil is very manageable on the starfire.

I'm so happy.

Has anyone shot both the ported and non-ported versions of the 3" 66? I'm interested in whether the porting really lessens perceived recoil, and whether it increases the flash.

Definitely increases flash with 357 Mag loads; especially noticeable at night.

I promised pictures and today was the perfect day to get them done. Here's my bonafides to be in the club:

The PC logo on the aluminum case mine came in:

The F-Comp:

The Comp:

The set of guns in the case:

Why I like the S&W K-frame & Colt D-frame combo:

Same speedloaders fit both revolvers, so if you carry the K-frame as a duty gun, and the D-frame as a back-up, your spare ammo will fit either gun (as long as it's loaded with 38s). Carry six 357 Mags (such as my favorite - the Winchester Silvertip) in the K-frame, and 38s in all your speedloaders as well as in the Colt, and you've got a tactically-smart combo for a wheelgun man.

I've had one of those for abt 3 years. Found it used in a local shop. One of the best I have; you won't regret getting it. Great trigger pull.

I've got number LHF00xx, a Model 66-4 F-Comp. I bought it new in October, 1995. Mine came in a blue plastic case. Uncle Mike's fingergroove grips. The information I got said the M-66-4 F-Comp was a batch of 600 guns. I paid $579.76 for it, sales tax and Brady fee included.

That would be a good project, take this gun and my 3 inch Model 66-3 and shoot them side-by-side to get a comparison.

tocohillsguy,

My memory is a bit fuzzy but I don't recall any noticeable difference between my 65LS and 66 F-Comp. I usually only shot 158gr .38's. Sadly I traded the 66 away but I still have the 65 and memories.
