Default 22-4 .45ACP Thunder Ranch

I picked this off gunbroker last week. The auction got surprisingly little attention. It started low, and ended low, just how I like'em. I guess you guys weren't interested, and I thank you for that

Took it to the range this afternoon and fired some of 230gr FMJ reloads consisting 6.8gr BE86. That's a hot one. Alliant claims 6.9gr drives a 230gr JHP out of a 5" bbl @ 935fps. This little 4" N frame bucked like mule! It grouped well but shot low due to being over speed for the fixed sight regulation, I think. I know some of these had half moon front sights that were too tall and had to be sent back to S&W, which I hear were fixed under warranty. We'll see.

I like .38/44 HD's, 1917's, 1926 HE's so this one is right up my ally. It's basically a modern rendition of an old school big bore defensive gun. I'm going to be putting some miles on this gun. Finding the right loads for different bullet weight for POA=POI will be tons of fun!

Nice snag from GB.

I've had mine for several years.
Your 22-4 appears to have the corrected front sight. I had to send mine in for the warranty repair because it shot nearly two feet low at 50 feet with 230 grain ball! She is dead on now.

You will enjoy shooting the 22-4 much more once the original grips are replaced with something more substantial. I have cocobolo finger groove Hogues on mine now. Ahrends Tactical Revolver grips work well too.

I would dial that load back until it does what a 230 bullet is supposed to do, there isn't a real need to push a heavy bullet that fast unless you like wearing out your handguns in half the time.

Absolutely. I want to get a 200gr coated LRN load worked up with Clays. That should be a pleasant all day casual shooter

Son of a .. " started low and ended low" that figures. The one time I don't look and one comes and goes right under my nose! You would think I'd have learned by now. Great looking gun by the way !

I hadn't thought about the T-Grip. Thanks for posting that pic. This may be my first branch into T-Grip territory

EDA to add I would have been very happy w/a non-TR 22-4. The whole reason I bought this one is because I let a regular 22-4 slip through my finger last year.

Congrats. I've got one of the first 100 made and simply took a file and some cold blue to the range and dialed mine it the old fashion way. Great revolver!

I am a BIG fan of the .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim in a revolver. I normally prefer adjustable sights. However, that said, that is a handsome revolver. If I had that one (or one like it), I would pick a load, and regulate the sights for it and that is all I would shoot in it.

I would use nothing but cast bullets. I would want to be able to shoot it a LOT and with cast bullets I could do so nearly forever. It would probably be easiest to regulate with a 230 gr. Bullet. Lee makes molds for a very nice 230 gr. Truncated cone bullet that should shoot to the sights when driven with the 5.0 grs. Of Bullseye charge. It will load "slick as snot" with full moon clips. That flat nose will have noticeably better terminal effect than hardball.

Steel full moon clips require tools to use. RIMZ 25 full moon clips are made of a Hydrocarbon Polymer and require NO tools. They are excellent.
RIMZ 25 FAQ

Good luck with the new revolver!

Congrats, I've always thought these were cool revolvers. I just picked up a TR 21-4 and I'm anxious to get it to the range.

Fixed the grip situation with the help of fellow forum member rbmac52. I got these and a set of presentations. I like the look of the dark wood on this paricular piece. These are quite alot more comfortable.
