Check out S&W new products for 2010 for new model with 2.5" barrel.
I have a 438 and called S&W 6 months ago to see if I could purchase
a 3" barrel that would fit. S&W said they had nothing that would fit. Maybe they do now.

David,
I'm thinking that the 2-1/2" barrel looks pretty good on the 638 and I may be able to live with it.
