My favorite is a 4" S&W model 13..
Next would be a T/C 10" Octagon barrel.
Have Reg mag, 27-7 (but doesn't fit the OP question), 27s, pre 27, 28s, 686s and my favorite to shoot is still the 13.. Go figure.
WOW--I HAVE TO START PAYING ATTENTION TO DATES. HOW CAN THIS THREAD REMAIN ACTIVE ALL OF THES YEARS ? ? ?

IN ANY EVENT, THE INFO IS STILL GOOD. I GOT MY FIRST LOOK AT A M681. ITS A VERY ATTRACTIVE REVOLVER, THAT I DID NOT KNOW EXISTED.....

I've carried .357 magnums since the mid 70s. I've enjoyed M66 4", Colt Trooper Mark III 4", M686 4", M640-1and now a M640 Pro Series for concealed carry.( K frame 66, the Trooper I would think is close to an N frame, L frame 686, and 640s J frame) All are Great guns and what I can tell you is get a grip that works for you. The 4" models recoil were fine with 3 finger wood grips. The 640 with a wood 3 finger grip bite was not wonderful but with the factory Smith 3 finger rubber grip I can shoot anything in factory .357 ammo from 110gr JHP to 158gr FMJ all day long with No bite at all. Hope this helps.

Default S&W 686-3 357Mag

I really like my Circa early '90's S&W Model 686-3
357Mag 6-shot Hand Ejector 6"Bbl.

Just a very solid, well built Revolver. Cylinder Lock up
is very tight is all directions. Finish and machining is
very good. Trigger pull is just stock and very
very good. Just a very accurate Revolver.

Current plinking reload; a lead double ended wad
cutter, 3.0grs Alliant Red Dot, CCI SP primer,
357 Win, R-P, or Starline cases.

Default .357 mag

I like the 686 either in 2 1/2 inch barrel or 4" barrel. You will, too.

For an easy to find gun, a 4" or 6" 686-3 or -4.

Harder, a 27-2 5".

Much harder, a 627-0 or -1 5.5".
