You'd sight it in like any other optics--shoot for groups, adjust the sights so that the groups hit where you want at the distance you want.
Maintenance isn't that difficult--make sure the glass is clean, and remember to turn off the dot when you're not using it.
An inexpensive mounting option for your 10-shot 617 (which should be factory drilled and tapped for a scope base) is the Weaver mount. At about $7 (from
MidwayUSA), it's probably the least expensive option available, and since it only needs to contend with the light recoil of .22 it won't have any strength problems.
I use the
Weigand mounts on my revolvers, even for the .22s. A bit more pricey at $30 apiece, but I haven't had any problem with them and they've been rock-solid.
