Blue Mo. 17 w stainless Cyl???
A friend has a new in box model 17 . 22
Bar code lable on the box says
SBRF ____
Finish : B
stock: SB
Features ** SPECIAL**
product code 100509
spec ord. no. 5983 0506
Features ** SPECIAL**
This gun is blue with a stainless cyl.
No one really believes that this came from the factory like this. Anyone have any ideas about this? One might think that Stock: SB might mean blue with stainless???? Put together gun?
Thank you for your reply in advance.

Does it look like this?
It's on page 184 in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

Why yes it does, except this one has Hogue (SP?) grips not wood...
What heck was SW thinking when they did that?

Are you sure the cyl is stainless and not an alloy? The -8's commonly came with the grey alloy cyl.

To quote the SCSW:
"Product Code 100509 6" B TT TH SB CS FL, 1994, special with stainless cylinder."
and this:
"200 assembled with a stainless cylinder with two-tone features, with 6" full lug barrel; Model 17-7, serial prefix of "BRF" and "BRC"; product code 100509, 1994."
The catalog shows a picture of a 17-8 with the 10 shot alloy cylinder, but it's blue/black.
Your grips could have been changed over the years.
You could always get a factory letter and be certain of what you have.

Don't some of the new performance center revolvers have different colored cylinders than the rest of the gun?

Model 17 "Pinto"
Hello...I had one of these about a year ago...what you have is what is known as a "Pinto" blue frame and barrel with stainless cylinder...this is a very rare revolver as only 200 made...it is worth considerably more than the standard model 17...I believe I got in the neighborhood of $650 for mine which at the time seemed like a lot but now is probably too low of a value...Hope This helps...

The factory was not making anymore model 17s at that time, they had 200 blue ( carbon steel ) frames and barrels left, no cylinders. They used stainless steel cylinders to complete the last 200 model 17s. They came with the Houge grips.

Go to the S&W website, click on Customer Support tab. Look on left for a link to Weapon History Request. Follow on-line instructions.

What would one of these be worth today?
I think I found one in a pawnshop and am going back today to verify the serial number range.
Thanks!

It is indeed a "BRF" serial prefix gun.
No box or docs but 95% plus with just a hint of blue wear at the muzzle.
Asking price is $599.
I think I am going to try to trade into it.

There is one of these (1 of 200) at a local pawn shop down the road with box and docs. Too rich for my blood.
