Last weekend the local range I like to use had the Nikon Monarch 2 X 20 EER on closeout for 150 bucks and since I had just deposited my tax return and transfered most of it into savings I decided that a reward was appropriate. Took a rail that I had prevously used on my 617 and cut and machined it to fit the 620. As for why, normally the 620 has a J Point reflex mounted on it and I keep throwing up 3 and 4 shot cloverleafs at 35 yards and I wanted to see if I could do any better with a scope.
I learned a few things today. One is that the reflex sight is not a limiting factor inside of 35 yards, however out at 50 yards it is. I also learned that I'll never be able to shoot Bullseye, just not steady enough. All my shooting today was done off a sandbag rest and even with that "crutch" I do not believe that I shot to the capability of the 620. Problem is that I kept throwing fliers that I attribute to release skills that still need improving on and a slight bit of shake. Once I had it sighted in at 35 yards I then proceeded to shoot one cylinder each at 25, 35, and 50 yards.
I also really took my time at the 50 yard mark and did my best to allow the trigger to break on it's own. If you take a look at the 50 yard target, the first 4 shots are in the group on the left, then 2 more to the right and one flier when I jerked the trigger. Unfortunately when I got home I found that the rear clamp screw had worked loose and suspect those 2 outlyers on the right may be the result of the scope shifting on the rail. As for the flyer, that was all me and I'm surprized it even hit the target.
BTW, ammunition used was American Eagle 38 spl. 130 grain FMJ. Perhaps not the best choice to make for a 357 Magnum when trying for precision but I'm not reloading yet and 357 Magnums in my area are just too expensive for plinking with. In addition I have some wrist issues that limits my tolerance for recoil to about 40-50 rounds of Magnums in one session.
Conclusion, the 620 can shoot. As much as some like to deride the 2 piece barrels as a cost cutter, it's undeniable that they produce great accuracy. I also found out that even with an actual magnification of 1.75X, a 12 inch target at 50 yards still looks really really tiny. As for the scope, it's currently in the safe and the 620 has the J Point mounted on it again. One of these days I'll mount the scope on the 617 and do a bit of experimenting with ammo to determine what it can do.
PS; I'm just a tiny bit disappointed. I was hoping to be able to produce a quarter sized group at 35 yards and came up a bit short. However, throw out that flyer and the group measures at 1.29 inch, not too bad but I sure wish I could stop throwing flyers.
