Question Hogue Wooden Finger Groove Monogrip on a 629

Hi.

Anyone out there have a 44 mag. with the Hogue wooden monogrip on it?

I'm getting my (new to me) 6.5" 629 Classic ready for the range. It has the original Hogue rubber monogrip now.

My 686+ and J frames have the Hogue smooth finish finger grooved monogrips on them. Besides looking great, I find them real comfortable to shoot. I like it on the J frame due to the smooth wood grip slides better under clothes for conceal carry than did the original rubber Hogue grip.

I have not fired the 629 yet, and all posts I read about the 44 mag. make me think this thing is gonna kick and fly outta my hand. (kidding)

Seriously, I load my own for all my stuff, and I won't be loading any/many "full house" rounds, nearly everything will be cast 240 gr. at med. velocities.

Anybody shoot similar stuff out of a 629 with the Hogue wooden finger grooved grip on it and how do you like it?

Thanks for any help!
Ss

I shot 100 rounds through my 629-1 44 yesterday at the range and have no scary recoil stories. I shot a box of 44 mag 240gr fn Ultramax's that was so docile I was almost let-down. I also shot a box of Remington 44 spec. 246gr rn bullets and thought they had more recoil actually. I believe that the Ultramax are loaded very weak, around 750 fps advertised and the Remingtons have an advertised 755 fps. I was a little disappointed at the performance level of the maginum rounds expecially when they cost the same as most other brands of target ammo, I also reload my own but wasnt set-up for the 44 mag. I have a set of wood target grips on my gun now and with the above loads I had no problems handeling the gun, however I ran some Hornady lever-evolution rounds through the gun wich advertise 1400fps (im sure thats for a rifle) with a limp grip and the grip checkering did "bite" my hand.

I have a 3" 629 with the wood Hogue finger grooves. Like them fine up to about 900 fps. After that point I prefer the rubber Hogues. They are more comfortable to my grip than Ahrends similar style.

FWIW: a tight-fitting thin leather glove, or mechanic's glove helps immensely when shooting the big bore magnums.

Good shooting with the 629 acquisition.

I have the same combo and my experience is the same.
