Default 617 with partial underlug

Just purchased a M 617-1 with a partial underlug. This is a 4 inch with production code 100564. s/n is BSD01XX.

As mentioned the gun has a partial underlug.

Does anybody have any information on this gun? Is it rare.

Thanks,

Fred

I remember seeing a short, limited production of the 617 with factory short shroud sometime in the early 1990's.
It looked like a Model 66 barrel.

I have never seen or heard of such an arrangement on a Model 617.

I, for one, would be very interested in seeing pictures of that gun if you get a chance.

As I stated above I am not aware of any stainless .22 S&W revolver have a ejector rod shroud. The only blue steel (or nickel) .22 that I know of was the Model 53.

Would like to here more about this gun from you.

Did you follow my link and look at the four inch Model 617?

bdGreen,

Yes I did follow your link. I have already visited that link, very interesting, but that has no shroud at all.

I am certian that my gun has a partial underlug, just like the several 66's I own.

The box does indicate special order number 4278 007.

Gun is a square butt, and has Pachmeyer "gripper" grips. I asked the previous owner (nice guy, I met at the gun show yesterday) if he had the original grips and he insisted that that is what the factory supplied.

The box is of course a 1 piece hinged cardboard type. On the BOTTOM is a factory label (not typical label that is on end) with two sets of bar coding. Under 1st bar coding is G100564 (the product code). Under the 2nd bar coding is BSD01XX (serial number) and beneath this is "S&W 617 4" 22LR S/S UNDERLUG SG

As far as pictures...I could eventually get one on the forum, but I will take me awhile. If it is possible I could email some one a picture and perhaps they could post it for me?

Thanks for you help.

Fred

Fred,
Thanks for the response and update. Sounds like you have a special one there.
That would be one to snag into a S&W .22 collectors' corral.

Thanx again,

HappyHunter,
Sounds like an interesting revolver.
Like bdGreen, I've also not seen or heard of a factory original partial lug gun. I have, incidently, seen guns that started life as full lug guns with the front of the lug milled off, there was a gunsmith that advertised doing this work back 8-10 years. I wish I could remember who that was, have not seen any reference to his work for some time.
The product code you note above, 100564 is for a standard full lug gun. Not to say that's definitive, as I've seen on a couple occasions where an incorrect product code is attached to factory guns.
I'd be very happy to post your pics for you, just PM me and I'll send you my email address.
If you can, please give us a shot of the underside of the barrel.
Really interested in seeing your revolver!

Regards,

"Even if this is not factory work, I am glad I snatched it up."

I am inclined to believe that it shipped with that configuration based on the printing on the box about the underlug.

If that is the case, how many were there and who ordered them.

That is a wonderful specimen and is quite the rarity if it letters. I don't know if it will letter, but, I believe it left the factory like that. It may have been a lunchbox gun. In any case you have a winner as far as I am concerned.

Can you tell us how you came by this acquisition?

I appreciate SmithNut posting those photos. They're pretty definitive.

"Now that is one cool 617! bd now has another grail gun to chase after."

Here I thought I was good for a while. I guess not. The search is on.

S&W did make a short production run of Model 617 revolvers with a half-shroud barrel.
I remember getting fliers from several distributors that showed them.

The run must have be very short because within a couple of months they were no longer listed.
"I think" (note the qualifier) that they were listed as both 4" and 6" versions and in 6 shot models.
"I think" (again the qualifier) that these were made before the 10 shot aluminum cylinder model came out.

Thank you again Smith Nut for posting my pics.

I purchased this gun this past weekend at a local gun show. An attendee was wanting to sell it. I picked it up for $400.

Seller claims that the grips where factory supplied...? What do you think?

Thanks everyone for your help.

The pictures look like a factory shroud profile.
I'll bet it letters...
Nice!

The grips are definately not factory, but at that price you can afford to put on a really nice set and still have a steal on the entire package.

This needs to be lettered, but when you do, be sure to send pictures and specifically ask to verify the barrel lug configuration.

I had a 617 back about 2000. It had a partial underlug on its 8 3/8's barrel. I sold it off because it didn't have a rear sight, only a scope.

So, Dick, tell us about that gun. Did you have the box and did it indicate the partial lug barrel?
Perchance a product code?

I would have been all over that one. An 8 3/8's Model 617 with a partial underlug would be an exciting one to get a hold of.

I shot my new toy at the bullseye range last night. At 50 feet one handed it put all bullets in the black on a slow fire target. After 20 rounds I swiched to my Pardini to prepare for the match.

The single action is very good (ala most S&W revolvers) the double action is suprisingly smooth with a predictable break. It stages well, I prefer a lighter D/A, but this is factory.

I used CCI standard velocity.

I prefer my Pardini for bullseye, but this is a great "woods" gun.
