Default I bought this - now what?

SMITH & WESSON 642 CT .38SPL CRIMSON TRACE LASER : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Any ideas on what I can do to make the finish look a little better?

My intent is to use it for summer pocket carry, so maybe I will just leave it alone. I am a little torn, but think the price was OK due to the CT grips.

If I bought it intending to carry it I wouldn't have anything done to it if it shoots as it should. The gun will get more wear and tear on it as you carry it so I'd leave it alone.

If the grips work, looks like you got a killer deal. If its going to be for carry, I wouldnt put much effort into cleaning up the finish.
Now considering I already have a setup for it, If it were mine, I would bead blast the cylinder and barrel. But I wouldnt go out and pay someone else to do it or go out and buy the stuff for it just for this gun.

Seller says the grips work. The whole gun looks like it needs a cleaning more than anything.

I have read some posts here warning not to use solvents like Hoppes#9 on these guns - most suggest wiping the aluminum with Breakfree CLP.

What should be used to clean the bore and cylinders? CLP doesn't seem like enough, and it sounds like Hoppes is too much.

I have a gun that the finish is coming off too. 625-10

I think it was from using Hoppe’s #9

You got a good deal as is, I’m going to keep a eye on this thread in case someone has a good idea for fixing it.

I don't think hoppes #9 will hurt any gun finish except some nickel finish gun where the nickel is plated over copper. I use it on all my stainless and blued guns and it works just fine.

I would leave it alone. If the grips work then you got a really good deal. I carry the same setup daily and love it.

IMHO, I'd polish the barrel and cylinder out I dont know what I'd do for the frame if it even need's anything done. I would never own a gun that has a finish problem, there ugly to me and I would fix her up. I think you did good for the price. My wife loves her's, good luck with it!

To clarify, I have pretty much decided that I am going to leave it alone. If I carry it every day, I would just get it back to this again.

My question was routine cleaning after shooting. Supposedly, Hoppes takes the clear coat off the anodizing.

Yep, you stoled that one, good deal! I bought mine new a year ago for almost twice that price. Mine is also showing wear on the clear coat, the blackhawk holster took the coating off in a heart beat. That hard plastic holster is rough on that type of finish. I switched to leather Galco Summer comfort, works nice.

"I bought this now what?"

1. Do the 'I got a great deal dance.'
2. When you get it ,remove the flag from the lock assembly.
3. Shoot it enough to make sure it runs reliably.
4. Sight in the laser for 10 feet.
5, carry it and feel secure.
6. stop asking silly questions.

#6 optional. I'm kidding.

Regards ,, Allen Frame

I have to wait until it comes in to see how these grips will work for pocket carry.

I have laser grips on an SP101, so I might end up swapping out the ones on this gun for the smaller CT laser grips.
