revolver presentation box
this may not be the thread for this, but i couldn;t find a better place. I recently bought a 10-7 that was made in 1982, the year i was born, it's in 98% orig shape and i want to make a wooden presentation box for it. But now I have a new interest. Monday I recieved a ruger blackhawk in 30carbine from one of my best friends, he was 71 and had cancer. He was like a second father, helped me remodel my house, hunted with me, was a groomsman in my wedding, was one of my best friends. He passed away this morning, and now I really want to make a beautiful presentation box for this revolver he gave me monday. The gun is in wonderful shape. He taught me a lot about building, mitering, framing glass, etc but i still wouldn;t mind plans to help guide me. I want to try and use the stuff i learned from him and make a really nice box...anyone know where i can get some plans or ideas? sorry for the rambling and thanks

I can't really help you out on finding any plans, but I wanted to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know how it can be. I recently lost my dad, and I still want to call him and chat with him about new guns that I have found recently. I think it is a great thing that you are wanting to do for your friend, and I hope someone here can provide you with what you need as far as plans go.
You might want to just trace the gun out on a piece of 3/4" plywood or similar type material, for use in the bottom half, and then cover it with red felt (for the Ruger). You culd use a piece of foam rubber for the top and cover it in the same material, thereby making it very similar to one of the types of cases that Smith used.
You can make the gun face either direction that you wish. This is a S&W case that needs relining, but it wil give you an idea of what to do to start. You can use the plywood to do the same thing. I actually have one like that, but I don't have any pictures of it. The second pic is what it would look like after lining it. You can choose to make seperate holes for six rounds of ammo, a tool compartment like the one in these pics. Whatever you want.

Ruger made wooden cases for some of their early 44 magnums. I believe Doc 44 has a picture of one of his 44's in just such a case. You may want to check his albums. The cases were cut out to fit the gun, so I think if you check out the pictures, you should have a good idea what to construct. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Hope that helps.

thanks for the pics and ideas guys. I was thinking of making it out of cedar or walnut.....i was going to line the bottom with felt and maybe make two wooden felt lined "cradles" that would hold the barrel and frame just behind hammer....then take a piece of glass and frame it with molding to make the lid....brass latch and hardware, and brass name plate....but if i make it that way it can only be laying flat on a table etc. ....it won;t be on display anyways, it will be locked up secure since i am paranoid after my house was robbed and 30 guns stolen 3 months ago....been a real ****** start to 2010!

If you are looking for a Ruger case, they are available on the company web site. As far as your K frame, I would buy a case from S & W. look here;
