I don't have a 617 but just fired my pre-17 that I just bought. So far I tried 4 different brands of ammo and 2 of them shoot good. Try some of the cheaper .22's first. You may find one that shoots nice. All guns like certain ammo and some shoot poorly. CCI blazer and some of the Federal shoot ok. Good luck, Larry

I like CCI Blazers. Cheap and shoot good enough.

My 617-6 really likes CCI Standard Velocity:

while my 617-4 doesn't seem to care between CCI Standard Velocity and Federal #750, so I use the cheaper Federals:

I've been running bulk pack Winchester Xpert HV from Walmart in my 617. Today I managed to get just a tick under 3 inches at 50 yards using a cheap reflex, a sandbag, and bench resting it. While I would like to have seen a 2 inch group, to be honest I don't think that ammo was the problem. One thing I found was that the image of the reticle in the sight shifted some when I moved my head, which is something at a real quality reflex wouldn't exhibit. I've also found that it's a real challenge to hit a target well at a distance where you can't even see detail in the target. Finally, as I have found out, getting a consistent release at these distances is not as easy as it sounds.

As for the Xpert HV, IMO it's probably good for 1.5 inches or better at 50 yards. I didn't see any signs of verticle stringing so the power level is consistent. About the only thing I would complain about is that it is a rather smoky ammo.

Mine prefers the federal 36 gn hp, just try several brands and stick to the one your particular gun likes.

I like whatever is on sale!! Seriously, I find that mine does slightly better with standard velocity fodder, but the difference is not easy to detect. I've not had any problem with any specific brand. I hear that Remington bulk stuff is problematic, but I've got a bunch of it and it seems to work fine, no duds and decently accurate.

Well, the reason I sold my fancy MKII was to go to a less tempermental launch platform for the .22 - a revolver. My 4" 617 has been very accomodating, ammo-wise... cheap works! Here is an early picture of my 617 before it got Ahrends retro targets and a green HiViz front sight:

Cheap rules... like my now gone from WallyWorld favorite - $16/550 Federal #750 36gr clad HP. When Federal catches up, they may be back - watch those folks! The odd 'flier' provides 'Mulligan' claims, too. In all honesty, my 617 loves Fed Game Shok - only at Academy these days - $9.59/50. It really likes the cheap stuff - ween 'em on the cheap stuff!

When hunting I always use CCI Velocitors. CCI Blazers are great for plinking.

I use mostly those bulk pack Federals. This gun seems pretty accurate no matter what I put in it though.

My 617 doesn't seem to be fussy but I usually feed it bulk Federal or Winchester from Walmart.
