Model 686 Plus Revolver - 5"
Still looking at 686's, well seems like there is not a bunch of them around-here anyway-, am leaning towards a 6" but still open on that. Today I found a lead on a 686 Plus. Well I have some questions about it and have been all over this site and the interent but can't find out what I'm looking for. I believe this is used as a competition model so to speak, am I alittle bit right here or way off base, anything else that makes it different from a non-plus model? Please enlighten me.

I'm sure they made some competition models on the plus platform, but the real difference is that plus models hold 7 rounds.

I believe there were two five inch versions of the 686. Mine is the first of two "stocking dealer specials", a dash 5 (I think) with a full lug and no internal lock. The second was a partial barrel lug with lock. I believe both were seven round cylinders.

686+ Pro
If you check the on-line catalog under new products, for 2010 they are offing a 686+ Pro in 5" with the slab sided barrel.
I have one waiting for me at the local pusher. Just waiting to return from a business trip to pick it up.
I already have the SSR but like the 5" better for range work. The SSR will now get Cyliner & Slide sights to make it a little better for carrying.

There was also the '04 Stocking Dealer Exclusive - with a partially lugged 5" barrel, Ahrends cocobolo square conversion/fg-ed grips, HiViz front, and V-notch rear sight. Mine -new - was priced $10 less than a 4" 686+ fall '04, when I bought it - $489 - a deal!
I wish that S&W still sent these sheets out on new releases. The cat ate mine - and got this copy from S&W's site. It's long gone from there - probably a bandwidth purge. The cat got this one, too. Yeah, 20+ years of college teaching, and that was my favorite excuse for no homework assignment, lab report, etc.

The one I have a lead on is coming from the company, a 2010 - 686+ Pro 5" model, supposed to be in third week of next month, also on the list is a new 686 6". I'll get a chance to look them both over and pick then. Was initially leaning towards the 6" but from what I have heard the 5" is nice.

Ah, a fresh batch - great!! They also should start delivering the re-issued 'Bloodwork' gun - a 2.5" 627. That should be followed, in short order, by the 3" 63 with HiViz sight. Add what I owe the IRS next month, and April will be miserable here!

Have you had a chance to pick up your 686+ Pro yet?
I'm still waiting for the one here to come in. Can you give me any feedback on it. Thanks

I have a 5" w/half lug. Got it because it looked RIGHT. Great proportions. Shoot great. Grips a bit big for anything but target shooting. Don't want to work on them but have not looked for replacements yet.

Wow, a 3 year old thread dig !
That 5" "Dealer Stocking Special" is a nice gun. I was fortunate to pick one up a few years ago at my LGS. I'm still looking for a 3" 686 to round out the collection.

Have the 4" 686+ and love it! Also like my 629 5" classic w/full under lug.
5" barrel really works for me.
