Default 625(45ACP) vs. 625(45ACP) Mountain Gun, which one balances better?

I am curious as to who has owned/fired both of these models, as to which one you prefer. Do you feel that the balance is better with the lighter barrel of the MG or the full lug barrel?

Thanks.

I don't have an exact match to the combo you're comparing but can come close.

I have a 5" full underlug barrel, .45 ACP, 625-3 with round butt and a 4" taper barrel, 44 spcl, 624 with square butt [Mountain gun configuration in all but name].

Both are exceptionally accurate shooters. I use the 625-3 more often at the range but only because of the huge amount of .45 ACP ammo I shoot in this and other semi-auto guns.

I greatly prefer the feel and balance of the 624 "Mountain Gun" configuration. The 624 feels light and nimble. The 625 is too nose heavy and clumsy to me. But it does put lead right were you point it!

It really is too much of a matter of personal taste, hand & grip size and simple subjective opinion to determine "which is better".

My experience is with the .44 Magnum versions, not with .45 caliber versions of either variation, but at least to me the difference is very slight. I find it hard to notice even in a direct A/B comparison with both on the bench. In the field, I'm not sure I'd ever really notice. In theory the extra muzzle weight would reduce muzzle flip and perceived recoil, at the expense of carrying the extra weight around all day. In practice, it's something like 3 ounces and I haven't really noticed a preference.

I have both and they are very different my 625 has a 6" barrel . I like both the full lug is a pleasure at the range with any load and the mountain is a much better carry configuration . Both shoot extremely well . Thank you will enjoy either model . Hope it helps .

I have most of the "N" frame S&W revolvers. I find the double underlugged barrels to hold much closer on target. However, I prefer to pack the slim barrels (as in my 624).

I have two 625's - one is a 4" JM Special (625-8) and the other is a 625-6 Model of 1989. I find my self shooting the 5" more as it seems to hold just a touch better. The difference is not great but it IS there. It did take me a while to enjoy the extra weight of the double underlugged barrel (maybe it's kind of like lifting weights at the gym - a bit of regular "doing" will allow you to reach a higher level of proficiency)?

At any rate, it is simply a matter of what YOU prefer. We are not all alike (thank the Good Lord for that!). I am a "Certified Old Fart" but am NOT a wimp (if that makes any difference). I have decent upper body strength for my age and as far as shooting is concerned, I prefer "weight forward" revolvers, for steady holding.

One more thing - recoil recovery is faster with a heavy underlugged barrel, if that is important to you.

FWIW

What everybody else said.

Actual weights of the two are 43.52 oz for the 5" and 38.59 oz for the tapered barrel 4", for a difference of slightly less than 5 ounces.

I like them both. The MG started out as a 5" full lug, with a new MG barrel from S&W. If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably keep the 5" gun as I prefer the forged parts vs. the MIM parts, though the MG has a slightly smoother action.

I have a 625JM and a 629 Mtn Gun. I shoot the 625 better because of how it is a bit bbl heavy.

The Mtn Gun is a great woods gun. 625 for matches.

Just for clarity, my comments were comparing 4" vs. 4". If you compare a pencil barrel 4" to an underlugged 6", you're going to start noticing differences.

I own a 625 MG and a friend had a 4" 625 with the full underlug barrel...no two ways about it for me the MG is quicker from the holster for the first shot and I really find no difference in the shootability of the two.

It is balance that I look for and regardless of caliber the MGs have it...

If you're only firing one shot, then there's no practical difference once it comes out of the holster.
If you're firing more than once, the full-underlug version puts weight where it's needed for fast shooting and steadying a sight picture.
Just look at revolver competition, where speed and accuracy are measured every time: the 625 is faster and more accurate to shoot when you're shooting fast.

If we are talking about 'packing' balance, the MG wins hands down. Shooting balance is another thing altogether and the heavier barrel wins there, iF we are taking the same (4") barrel length.

I don't know about the 45acp, but I've shot a 45colt Mountain Gun along with a 25-5, on the same range trip. I much prefered the 4" 25-5 for shooting, but I sold the 25-5 and kept the MG because it was noticably lighter to carry and I like the look of the tapered barrel. The 4" heavy barrel on the 25-5 definitely made follow-up shots quicker, but I wasn't planning on doing a lot of rapid-fire strings with it. The MG is no slouch, either. If I were into competitions, I'd have kept the 25-5, but I wanted the 45colt for woods carry, so the more packable MG won out. I know the difference in weight isn't much, but when you traversing steep terrain even small amounts add up.
