Question Question on the finish of a 6.5" 500 Magnum w/ Ported Barrel Half-Lug

I just got my new .500 Mag 6.5" ported barrel model. I have a couple questions. First is the barrel fitted inside a shroud? I see the porting goes all the way around the inside of the barrel. And being it is a half-lug barrel, I noticed on the bottom of the barrel between the point where the half lug ends and the muzzle you can kinda feel where they finished the barrel and it is not quite rounded. You can't really notice it with looking at it as it looks rounded but when you touch it you can feel a bit of a bump where they finished it off. And where it meets sleeve at the barrel end it is rounded perfectly. I was just wondering if this is the way S&W does all of these 1/2 lug models, to give it a bit more strength. Anyone who has one I would sure appreciate any information.
Thanks,

Yes, the barrel is shrouded, you'll notice a "female" bolt pattern in the muzzle.

The one I had didn't have any finish defects, is that what you asked or are you saying it doesn't appear to be an extension of a cylindrical pattern? Don

Hi Don
It doesn't have any finish defects, what I was trying to explain is the underside of the barrel from the point the half lug ends to the end of the barrel it isn't completely rounded, until the end of the barrel and it is exactly in line with the half lug. To make it clearer to you, picture it as a full lug barrel and they cut 1/2 of it off and ground it down to the end of the barrel. If you turn the gun upside down and look from the trigger guard you can see the lines that follow the lines on th half lug to the end of the barrel. It is not visible from the side view and only from the bottom, I noticed it when I was giving it the first cleaning from the factory and felt the ridges. If you have one yourself turn it over androll the barrel in your fingers and if it is the same you will feel the "bumps". This is the best way I can describe it to you, it wouldn't show up in a picture.

Also wanted to add it is a really nicely machine gun, all seams and plates are perfect. The shrouded barrel is something new to me and the "invisible extension" of the half lug to the end of the barrel isn't even noticeable as where the barrel meets the sleeve it is perfect. Just was wondering if S&W made them this way for extra barrel strength, and what your thoughts were....
Thanks
