Thumbs down The reason I lock my revolver is...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intergrading the internal lock on a revolver is a virtuous and vicious circle of hand gun evolution? Just goes to show, you shouldn't monkey around with firearms.

Ok, this is a dumb thread, but so is the internal lock on revolvers/pistols.
I just can't think of any good ligitiment reason for the internal lock.
What is the thinking behind it?

Just play the game.
Why do you lock your revolver?

The reason I lock my revolver is...

It's a lawyer thing, tossed in to make the Democrats happy. It's a stupid idea and S&W should have been ashamed of themselves to do it. Maybe they were, but made the deal anyway for business reasons. Who are you going to buy from if you don't buy from them, Taurus?

None of my firearms has an internal lock. If I want them secured, I put them in a safe or in a holster on my hip.

Locking a pistol so you kids can play with it is about the most irresponsible thing I have ever heard. Other than letting they play with a loaded pistol, unlocked, that is.

YGTBSM, please. Tell me you are kidding.

I thought i'd never own a S&W revolver with that silly lock but....recently picked up a 686 with a 5" barrel. I wanted a 5" .357 shooter and said "Oh well"

I'm going to lock it so the dog can safely chew on it.

It just doesnt make sense. If someone did want to lock their guns, the cable locks that were provided were just as effective as the IL and much less intrusive.

I lock mine when I'm a guest in homes with kids, and temporarily lose control/custody of the weapon, as when taking a shower or etc. A cable lock would be just as effective, just not as convenient.

I've had a 340PD since December. Have it on right now as a matter of fact. I have never even stuck the key in the lock. After what I've read about it possibly locking up when it's not supposed to, I figure I'm not even going to activate it. I'm not an engineer (obviously) but I figure why tempt fate?
I'm considering installing the plug.
In answer to your question, when would I use the lock? Can't think of a time or reason.

That is just dumb. Mine never goes off when I use it as a hammer and I just don't see the need to use the lock for something so frivolous.

So that I have another key to keep track of. Maybe a magnetic key box stuck on the side of the revolver will help me find it.

It will get me off the hook when I go through Airport security.!

Of course, it's moot if I never regain consciousness.

The reason I lock my revolver is because if I am in a situation where I may need to shoot someone, I will have time to think about the reprocussions and maybe change my mind while I am fumbling for the key in my pocket to unlock it. Im sure the bad guy will be understanding and give me as much time as I need to consider what I am about to do.

Bingo! At one time, I would have liked a good lock (not one with tiny cheap parts that occasionally render the gun nonfunctional) so that I could lock the gun carried in my outer coat pocket and hang the coat up in a closet. My carry methods have changed, so I have no use for one right now, but I have no quarrel with those who can use one. Too bad S&W doesn't quite have the locking thing mastered.

The internal lock is a testament to poor engineering, and illustrates just how far a company will go to embarrass itself.

The reason I lock my revolver is to keep someone from steeling it.

Just a dumb idea. Better to lock your guns in a safe for storage.

But, but, I lock my car so no one can steal it, I just figgered that Ol Slick Willy had worked out a deal with S&W so that if I locked my gun, nobody could steal it.......

I don't have any with locks, but that's beside the point.

I lock mine because guns are dangerous, and have a mind of their own. I leave my chainsaws, cars, power outlets and swingsets unlocked and ready to roll because they have never hurt anyone.

After seeing pics and etc...

I lock it so when when my kids and I are driving (in our '70's Ford Pinto or '80's GMC made pickup) to the gunsmith (to get the malfunctioning lock fixed), and a drunk crashes into us, the resulting fire won't make the rounds cook off.

edited: Malfunctions will be a hot topic; the nature of self defense. I really like the Classic series wheelguns, sweet. I'd like to see S&W just quietly do away with this problem; but keep selling the guns.

Because it is the safest thing for a person to do.

So when I removed the lock from the gun I turned the key prior to putting the "lock" in the box.

So I can twirl it on my finger like in the cowboy movies and slam it into the holster without unloading it.

If the interlock malfunctions to function when it is engaged in the lock position then the trigger and hammer will function like it is not supposed to function and the revolver will no longer be longer secure. Of course, you could just think you locked it! Did I say that right?

I lock my revolver to practice for living in Washington DC some day. I figured that the locking would be good practice for when the judges rule some day that handguns must be locked, in a safe and disassembled when inside the house. That way DC residents can still "own" guns, and the judges comply with Heller.

Intergrading the internal lock on a revolver is a virtuous and vicious circle of hand gun evolution? Just goes to show, you shouldn't monkey around with firearms.

Well, my response isn't a joke. I have no problem with gun makers incorporating a lock into the design, as long as they offer the same model without a lock, and as long as the lock isn't a frigging hole in the middle of the side plate. I sold my 642 with a lock, just cause I wasn't that great a shot with it and prefer a semi auto for carry. The lock DOES have advantages, just not the one that Smith uses. As for using a cable lock, it's much easier to have a little key on the keyring you always carry than to carry a cable lock around with you if you feel the need arises to lock your gun.

I lock my revolvers so the liberals who voted for mister "O" won't hurt themselves when they break into my house.

Wait? What? The newer revolvers have a lock that requires a key?
Sorry guys, all of my S&W revolvers were made before 1990.
I actually have no idea about the safety features on the newer guns.

Also, first post.

I would lock my revolver, (if I owned a revolver with a lock) because it has a lock. If it has lock it must be a good idea to use the lock right? Maybe it can be converted to keyless entry like my car, then I can have another key fob, and just press the button.

I lock my revolver because that way I don't have to remember Rule Three. I mean, four whole rules? Sheesh!

I'm happy to say that I CAN'T lock any of my handguns - all are pre-lock. And that's the way it's going to stay !

Default I lock my gun because......

...The nightmares where I can't defend my family because everything is in slow motion or I fumble putting the cartridges in are just not scary enough!
No kidding I had a IL 642 for one weekend. I thought I had unlocked the weapon before I put it in my holster. I carried the whole weekend and it was kept by the nightstand at night and Monday I went to show it to my brother and the gun had been locked the whole time. I thought I was going to be sick. I traded back to the shop at a loss and was patient and found a 640-1 within a month.
Nothing against the lock, I am just not a competent enough human being for one. I carry revolvers because I need to keep self defense simple and the IL is one more thing to worry about. All in my humble opinion ofcourse.

Because Nancy, Barry and Hillary would want me to. Because they know best, and they say guns are too dangerous for normal people (who usually vote Republican) to own. Then, some day, I can carry them to Mayor Bloombutt and turn them in. Oh, joy.
