I'm looking at a NIB model 63 no dash with a 4" not pinned barrel. I've also noticed no dash models with pinned barrels. I just assumed that a dash number would have been added when S&W decided to not pin the barrels. Can someone explain why S&W made both versions during the "no dash" era ? Is one preferred over the other ? The asking price for the unpinned model is $550. Is that about average with box and paperwork and tool?
I dont know about prices in your state, but in Michigan it all depends on the seller. You can pay 350 to 500 dollars for used 38s &357s . As for the pinned barrels,I would alway take a pinned barrel over a non-pinned barrel. To me it is a statement of quality, but I also have non-pinned S&W too.
The model 63 is one of the few exceptions to the unpinned barrel having a new engineering change number. Many prefer the pinned barrel but I don't think there is any functional difference between one of these and the unpinned version. $550 with the box and tools is at the upper end of current pricing in my observations.
Say! That's almost the same question I just asked about some Model 10s I have; I didn't see this! How can the same models be both pinned and non-pinned?
There was no engineering change eliminating the pin for the barrel.
It just happened at the same time they eliminated the recessed cylinders on the models that had them.
