Question for NYPD revolver guys
When the 64s were issued in the 1980s, (NY-1) were they issued with wooden magnas or rubber pachmayrs as standard? I have seen it both ways but I was wondering if there was some sort of standardization to this. Thanks.

I am virtually certain they all came with factory grips. They had the option of using certain approved grips. Either the guy at the range told you "Boy, get rid of those little grips and put on a set of Pachmyers" or, as soon as you hung out with "real" cops, they told you to get rid of them. Possibly, they stayed on long enough to look like two pieces of driftwood from car doors, apartment stairwells and concrete impacts and then you got the rubber grips.
I have an NYPD Ruger Service Six. The guy I got it from said that on "Gun Day" he picked the Ruger because he was a big guy and the Ruger was the biggest one they had to choose from. And, he then put the biggest rubber grips he could find on it.
Worked well for me becasue he included the unused original grips when I bought it.

The way it was told to me, is that the guns came from S&W with wood magnas and thru authorized police supply houses, officers usually purchased either Pachmayrs or Uncle Mike's grips. I am sure I will be corrected if wrong, but for some reason, I believe, only those two aftermarket grips were approved for duty use. The next time I see a friend of mine who graduated from the NYPD Academy in the 80's, I will ask him to see what he remembers.

I have always wondered if the Service Six was the only official gun of the six series to be carried, or whether Speed and Security sixes were carried too. I have been told the service six was the authorized gun but that the speed/service sixes were carried too nonetheless.

It's my understanding that NYPD got REAL SNOTTY about carrying unapproved weapons.

My wife's model 64 NY-1 NYPD issue in the mid 80's came with rubber Pachmyre grips in the box from the equiptment section when she bought it. I have it in my hand now. My model 10 issue 1983 yearM came with wooden grips which I immediately discarded and bought authorized Pachmyre's. My brother-in-law's Ruger which I am now holding says Police Service-Six and came with wooden grips. He only owned one gun as did I, not really gun guys. That model Ruger ( Police Service-Six ) ser # 162-02xxx was the only model Ruger authorized, and sold at the Equiptment section. As a Sgt, every time a cop bought a new/used gun a blotter entry had to be made w/serial #. I must have entered and inspected hundreds of guns over the last 20 yrs.
Finally, I am 99% sure only Pach's were authorized, not Uncle Mikes. I still have my Patrol Guide and can look it up if need be.
As a cop here in FL now Glocks are only authorized weapon. My wife hass model 22 My dept issues Model 23.
Will try to post pics soon.

Interesting that she was issued a handgun with rubber grips right from the Equipment Section. The first stainless guns came in during the late 80s (1987. I was involved in getting them authorized. I used the excuse that our blued guns finish was inferior to stainless. We had had a bad batch from S&W, the so-called “D” series, that rusted if you just looked them.). I served as a sgt and lt in the Firearms and Tactics Section and know we ordered our firearms from the various vendors with stock grips. But, stranger things have happened. Like the revolver we got from S&W (model 10) that had no rear sight….
For the record, I was in from 1969~1990. Then on to a Cape Cod dept till now. After Sept I pull the pin....
