Default 642 Pro Series / Power Port

Anyone familiar with this gun?

I'm curious to know if the extra 1/4" of barrel over the standard J Frame snub 1 7/8" barrel helps at all in accuracy and muzzle velocity?

I'm also curious about the porting. It's different than S&W's magna porting in that the power port is on the top of the barrel instead off to the sides. Does this port significantly decrease verticle recoil? Does the flash out of the hole impair the shooter's sight picture, especially in low lighting setting?

Would love to hear all around opinions about the gun as well.

I bought one about three weeks ago and I really like it. I had the chance to shoot it back-to-back against a 442 and a LCR, the 642 PP is much easier to make a follow up shot with. The muzzle flip was much reduced as compared to the other two. I shot 158gr +p and 135gr +p from all three and the 642 pp was just a lot easier to control, not that any of them were difficult.

One thing to note though is that the extra length in the barrel is not really extra length like you would think. The rifling stops well before te end of the barrel, the last bit is just larger then the barrel diameter and is there for the powerport chamber. Kind of added length to make room for the port on top, I would estimate that the last 3/8" of the barrel is not rifled. Think of it as a really deeply crowned barrel .

I got a steal when I bought mine, it was new and the shop had installed a Trijicon front sight already. With the price I got it for I was prepared to just sell it if I did not like it, but it is definatly a keeper.

Reduced muzzle flip and better front sight will be the advantages.

Edit to add: The dark finish will conceal better, generally speaking.

I looked at one recently and really like it,I think it would be cool if S&W would make make a model 340PD340M&P with one of these barrels as well.

I too, would be concerned about the muzzle flash going up while shooting the gun a night for a concealed carry weapon.

While I have not shot my 642 PP yet I do have a 66 PC Carry Comp and have fired it at night along with my 2" 15 and my 2.5" 686 and find the ported gun really does'nt make that much difference. All short barrel guns will throw a nice fireball but not enough to make you see spots.

I had one but never fired it before selling it. I had ordered it sight-unseen and when it arrived, I was surprised with the barrel design. I think I'm just an all steel type of revolver guy. Like the other poster’ I had a night sight inserted into the factory front sight by Tool Tech. It was sorta small and a bit hard for me to see in the dark. Either way, it wasn't what I expected so it found a new home while it was still NIB and unfired.

Hmm. Good point. It's the new 2.5" version that has the longer ejector.

I like it. At $350 it was a bargain.
The extra 1/4 inch is not rifled .

1/4 inch of barrel will make no difference in accuracy. Nor will it make any difference in velocity.

I have no interest in any firearm with a ported barrel of any sort. They are miserable to shoot.

Just my opinion, of course.
