WOW! By factory, I assume you mean S&W did the work. If so, this kills all the threads I have read about S&W not being able to do an "old style" re-blue. That is one fine looking revolver.

Actually, if you look at some of the beautiful photos of some of our serious collectors and look at the bluing on some of the older guns you'll see that while this one is indeed beautifully done, it is more 'black' than 'blue'. A lot of the older guns had a polish and a depth of bluing you could "fall into". There was a definite "blue" to the hue compared to today's finishes. Some specialty shops still offer such but S&W and the larger companies are under such scrutiny by the enviro police they've gone to more "environmentally safe" chemicals and processes.
Not taking away a thing from the OP's refinished prize - it is indeed a very nice job and no doubt a thing of beauty to those who appreciate "blue steel".

S&W Usually does and excellent job on refinishing older wheel guns. Nice looking 29

With the timing work and couple of parts replaced along with the refinish bout 218.00. The refinish job is listed on the S&W website @190.00.
I'm sending a 27-2 next, I'm very pleased.

Agreed. I had a Model 57 refinished last summer and while it is a beautiful job, it is not the old time S&W Blue that we are use to seeing on older guns.

Really can't tell as I was a little ashamed of the way someone took care of the gun so I didn't take any closeups.
Must have been a brillo pad to the face of the cylinder.

That looks great. I just got my S prefix 28-2 back from S&W and had them tighten things up, bright blue refinish and red ramp/white outline sights. They even re-stamped the emblem on the sideplate (It had been refinished before and the insignia was almost gone). The gun is absolutely gorgeous, and the total price (including return shipping) was $302. I have a perfect condition 6" 28-2, but after seeing the refinish on my other gun, it's going back to the factory for the same treatment.

Beautiful, and I don't blame you one bit for having it done. I have an old .44 Special that my grandfather bought new in the 20's or 30's that I would love to have restored. It is just low on my priority list. I actually live in Hamilton Bowen's back door. I have thought about letting him take a look at it but am scared to know what it would cost. To me, restoring it outweighs the reduction in value that would result. I am never going to sell it, so having it look like it did when he bought it would give me the most pleasure. Someone can worry about the value once I am dead and gone.
