The model 625,an informal pictoral essay.Revised 10 18 11
Well, now friends, it's been a while since I started this thread and
while all the info contained herein still stands on its own merit,
the collection has grown somewhat.
As of October 18th. 2011 the group includes 21 pieces in 45 caliber.
Here are a few indoor shots as the mosquitoes and rain has driven me indoors until winter arrives. .
8 625s in 45 Colt now.
And a total of 15 Smiths in 45 Colt ctg.
Here are 3 625s in 45 A.C.P. and 2 blue. A 1950 target and a 1917 Army Commercial.
Regards ,, Allen Frame

Crazy?
I've gone 625 crazy too, so don't feel bad. Not quite as crazy as you though. I've got a 625-8 PC, 625-8 and a 625-3, 3". I'd post pictures, but you've already got it covered. Real nice collection you've got there, nice backyard too. All I've got for a backyard is a cornfield, so my pictures wouldn't have near the effect yours do.

Allen;
VERY nice pieces and very nice photography, as usual.
I had my 625-6 (.45 ACP) out to the range Friday (for the second time this weekhttp://smith-wessonforum.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Then, there is my 625-8 Jerry Miculek Special:
I have Pachmayr grips on most of my revolvers. I shoot nearly all of them and have a "root of the thumb" problem that does not work with wood grips of any shape. So, mine aren't as pretty are yours, but I LOVE them, anyway.
In the past two years, I have shot my 625's more than all of my other revolvers put together.

So that's where they all went! I've been wondering why I never come across any .45 Colt S&Ws.
Beautiful guns, Allen -- and as expected, beautiful photos too.

Nice job Allen!
Well done, the pics are great, your background is fantastic, especially for us NW folks that don't see sun and good weather all that often....
Good info, you'ved done your homework and presented the M625 collection extremely well.
Congrats!

Nice bunch of guns. You have a nice collection of 25's. Love the view. Has to be relaxing to sit in your backyard after a day of work. Larry

You need one of these to round out that fine collection.
625-5 Classic in .45 Colt:

I saw a guy on Gunbroker with 3 of them earlier this week.
It is by far the best shooting S&W I own.

Allen...great photos sir!
About the 6 1/2" power port, I don't see any porting? And I see the front sight is not even with the end of the barrel. Is it ported on top of the barrel past the front sight? Forgive my ignorance and congrats on a very fine collection of 625's.

Allen, that is a fantastic essay on the Model 625. I think my personal favorite is the '96 Mountain Gun (makes me think of what a Highway Patrolman in .45 Colt could have looked like).
R Crabtree has a question for you up above.

R Crabtree , to answer your question about the 625-7 Power Port,
the porting is a large single port in front of the front sight
just like all other Smiths that are " power ported".
The 686 and the F-comp come to mind.
Regards , Allen F

Thanks for bringing this back up.
Question for you or anyone else that can answer...
You said that this is a "pretty scarce variant". When I bought mine (new) I was told that it was a limited run of around 1000. Is that a number that is generally considered "scarce", or were less actually produced. Are there production numbers available for these ?
Mine was a late May production, CAY prefix, 13004 5 product code. Is your product code a typo or were there multiple runs of 625-6MG's in '96 ?

625-4, Model of 1989 (made 6/94). Actually a fun gun. Low pressure cartridge plus heavy gun make for a fun day. This version had color case on hammer/trigger.

Every time I see the tops of palm trees and that man made lake load up on my screen, I know I'm gonna see some good pics.
Those Spegel grips are amazing; I thought he only made boot grips.
Here's my 625-10. Scandium frame from '03.

Kris,
Did your -6 MG come with a later style thumb piece? I saw a CAW that had one and wondered if it was orginal or replacement.

Wow! Allen-frame, you seem to have the 625 bases covered.
I too would like to know how scarce the 625-6 45 Colt Mountain Gun is. I have one who's serial number is CAS38XX that I got in May of 1996. Also, is the production number of 150 examples for the 625-7 3" barreled 45 Colt only for the laser engraved versions, or all versions? I have one that is not engraved.
Thanks,
Timbo

Bob ,nice to see you posting pictures.
Obviously the 625 is a favorite of yours.
Great bunch!
The laser engraving on the 3" 625-7 was done on a trip back to the factory for a master action
job by the previous owner.
I don't care for it much ,but it is what it is.
Regards,Allen
I'm just sayin'.

Thanks Allen,
This was a great idea for a post. I didn't have the nice warm background scenery you did so I just took the pictures in the house. Yes the S&W model 625 is one of my favorite revolvers. I don't own a 45 Colt 625 but I do own a few model 25's and SA from other companies, maybe that's a different post.

That's a wonderful photo essay, Allen.
I'm in love with .45 ACP as a revolver cartridge. For me, it's just perfect. In the right gun it can shoot as accurately as any caliber made and it can do so with minimal recoil. I presently own a 625JM that is my favorite revolver.

After doing some research, I found out today that this gun was once owned by Wiley Clapp (gun writer), and that he used this gun in one of his articles. I haven't been able to find out which magazine the article was in, but I'm still looking. I hope to make contact with him so I can get information about his use of the gun in the article.
If anyone has any info or maybe a copy of the article, please let me know.

My USPSA gun. Nothing special really, a dash 8 with a decent trigger job, a new rear blade and the front drilled for a bit of brazing rod.

I love this -3
then I got the -10. I really didn't think it would be that harsh to shoot.

Great thread with so many fantastic revolvers. I was lucky to have found one, a -4. Now my favorite .45:

The altamont magna stocks just look "right" to me, but I'll confess that it usually wears Ahrends.

I have just a couple of 625's, a five inch with a great action job and my 3 inch. I would like to find a 4 inch, but seems they all got scooped up by the idpa croud.

I was not exposed to ...
revolvers in .45 ACP until I was well into middle age. Now I own two:
Both shoot great, recoil is manageable (when I put some Hogues on the 1917!).

Two views of a 625-6 in .45 acp. This one wears an unknown makers custom grips (signed inside, "Steve") and I'm wondering if they are Herrett Ropers. In any event, smoothest DA pull I've ever felt outside of my PC 627 Bloodwork and very reminding of a pre war action type smoothest. Accurate as all get out too. Sorry about the pic quality.

I have had two 4" 625's in 45 Colt. I sold my 1st and had to have one to shoot. Current Model 625-7 4" Mountain Gun.
Great shooter, I would like a 3" next.

Alan and others who took the time to post their goodies. Beautiful revolvers. I like the one with the unfluted cylinder the best. Changes the whole look of the revolver. Question, the polished section on the cylinder, does it serve any special purpose or just for looks?. Frank

Hey Frank.
My rationale for polishing the area where the turn line would normally be was simple.
It hides the turn line on a stainless gun.
The 625 came to me used and i decided to experiment with it a bit.
So it's mostly just aesthetic.
Regards
Allen Frame
