Just doing a little shameless “sharing”, but after posting pix of my modest S&W revolver collection a few months ago, somebody posted “you’ll have 3 more in a year”, and I guess I’m on my way with this newly added 686+, 3”. And as nice as wood looks, these Uncle Mike’s combat grips seem to fit me just right, and to my eye, make for an aesthetically pleasing 2 ½” or 3” Smith. Guess I’m partial to the stainless finish, the 66 in satin stainless looks (and handles) especially nice. Thanks for looking, I can see this “Smith revolver affliction” is serious!

I agree, it is serious. Two months ago I basically had one S&W revolver. Now I have six in the house. And WANT more.

You're right about the UM grips, they are the best grips for SS smith revolvers. I just picked up a set for my 686 CS-1 and I love them. What are you gonna get next? Maybe a 629?

Beautiful! Does only the L frame have the white outlined notch in the rear?

I've got to agree with you on this part of your post.



I put the Eagle Grips Secret Service stocks on my 686-6 Plus for concealment. These are very nice stocks, but the factory supplied Uncle Mike's are SO much better.



AND, much more comfortable when shooting .357 Magnum ammo!

Those are beautiful guns sir. I like the barrel length as well.

Maybe its me, but the first thing I have done to every gun that had them is ditch the awful Uncle Mikes. I've got a box full of the useless things, one day I'll get around to giving them away or something.

I have no problem with rubber, in fact that is what is on many of my guns, but Hogue's or Pachmyars, not UM's which in my opinion stands for Useless Mess.

I guess that's why they sell them both.

Hey, you guys got any ugly old wood junk grips you would like to trade?

I pick mine up Sunday and will let you know. But, I don't plan to keep those grips on it for more than a day or two. They are not my type.

Good looking stainless S&Ws! I detect a little difference in the grips - especially the J frame versus the others. Any noticeable difference in feel?

Thanks for the support about the "affliction" guys!

Jerry, the Uncle Mikes on the J-frame have a very similar feel to the K and L frames, but are definitely slighter smaller in size, as evident in first picture. I would expect they would be particularly well-suited to someone with smaller hands, but all 3 are very comfortable and secure to handle.

Retlawman, you are correct, only the 686+ has the outlined notch on the rear sight--I'm not familiar enough with the various Smith models to know when that feature has gone in and out of production, but I do think it helps target acquisition.

Highlander, you may be hearing from me about that box of "useless" UM grips, I feel like as forum members we need to help each other out.

As far as "what's next?", a few years ago I was all teed up on a 5" 629, but somehow felt like just a little too much gun in my hand--ok, so maybe I'm a wimp. But I've got a few semi's in .40 and .45, so I feel like I've got the larger holes covered, so to speak. Just might splash around in the K-frame pool for awhile--that doesn't sound so bad now, does it?

sdg380,

those are some beautiful revolvers! I, like you, started with one pistol, and now I have three in two months. I started with a 66-1, and I put on UM's grips as well, and purchased a 638 five shooter. I purchased a 459 9 mm S&W as well since I could not resist the price. A 649 is next on my list.
