Unfired 686 " Classic Hunter " I want a 3", Cut it?
The title says what I am considering, Thoughts, I also have a 686 snub, do I just re-barrel that one? The thought of a unfluted 3" er just makes me smile. Thanks in advance,
John

I would not suggest ever modifying the physical appearance of a firearm. There may come a time when you want to sell the gun and your modification just destroyed the value of it.
From an engineering standpoint, shortening the barrel will put more pressure on the gun in recoil and the shooter will feel it more as well.
Why not leave it as it is or else sell it and buy one in the size you would like? I bet there are more people wanting a longer barrel than a shorter one. My tastes and findings is a four inch shoots better than a 3 inch.

John ,I have cut and crowned a few Smith and wessons in my time.
The one I did that resembles the project you are considering
was a model 629, that I cut from 6 1/2"to 3 7/8".
I did it for 1. I did not have a lot of money into the gun, and
2. Smith never made a 4" full lug model 629.
The gun you want exists,a 3" round butt 686.
If I wanted one badly enough I'd search and find one and make the deal.
Your 686 is too nice to mess with, and anyway you'd have a
3" square butt gun.
If you really want it done right, send it to Mag-na-port and
spend the money ,you will not be disappointed, their work is
top notch.
Good luck ,,Allen

That 686 is somewhat rare. I'd sell it to someone that would appreciate it to get what you want.

Yup, I have one exactly like it. I would never alter it's appearance other than custom stocks. I am also currently looking for a 3" 686.

Sell it! Many others would want this unique gun just as it is.

Classic Hunter
Sell it, buy a 3" 686. They only made it 1 year.

I agree with the other posters. Please sell your 686 Classic Hunter and buy a 3" 686 if that is really what you want. Don't mess up a fine revolver trying to make it into something you can get otherwise.
