Questions about M29-3 "Sillouette"
Why is this the only model 29 variant (that I'm aware of).....made WITHOUT the classic white outline rear site we all know and love?
I bought one of these guns back in the mid 1980's and have since sold it. (something I regret) I was never a silloutte shooter, but when I owned the gun I had a smith fit a standard 29 white outline site to it.....and to me it improved the gun. The guy I sold it to liked it as well.
FWIW......if ya'll ever see a 29-3 silloutte gun on the market having a white outline rear.......that just might be my old gun!

According to Taffin, that gun came with a standard adjustable rear sight with a higher blade and also a four-position adjustable front sight (to be set for the four distances used in long-range silhouetting.
Supica and Nahas, 3rd edition, specifies the "adjustable rear sight a black blade with a narrow and deep notch."
My suspicion is that the black blade was used to contrast more vividly with the chickens, sheep, pigs, etc. at those extended distances. My experience with silhouetting consists of only one fun afternoon with John Linebaugh and the boys at one of his seminars in Texas.

I would have to un-bury and dig mine out, but I believe that the original M-29 "Classic Hunter" also had a plain black rear sight blade. The Classic Hunter came with the 4 position front sight, a full length underlug 6 inch barrel and non-fluted cylinder. Book says W.O. but mine, boght new, doesn't have one.

Most, if not all revolvers with a Patridge front sight blade have a plain rear sight also. I believe the same is true for revolvers with a plain ramp.

FWIW, the Mountan Guns have plain black rear sight blades (except the 686+ -5 MG).
This would fit with Doc44's statement about plain ramps.

The 6" 29-3 with the 4 position front sight was called the classic hunter. Don't ask me why. I used mine for Silhouette and it worked well. I believe the all black sight helps with concentration.

When first introduced, the gun had no name. SHOOTING TIMES Magazine and S&W had a contest, "Name That Revolver!" and Classic Hunter was the winning submission.
