I just placed a 66-2 with a 2.5" barrel on lay-away with a serial number prefix of ACC7xxx. I already know it's not an 'ace' but the action and condition simply blew me away so I had to have it. I almost felt like I was back in 1974. Anyway, can someone tell me the year or period of manufacture?

Triple alpha guns like, "ABC123" serial numbers, will be in the factory computer. Call S&W CS Monday and they can tell you exactly. I don't think they want CS people spending all day looking up shipping info but they have been helpful on occasion in the past.

This is correct. Since the "Alphabet" Serial Numbers began S&W has been keeping computerized production records. The date Customer Service will give you is the date the gun was "Put up" as S&R refers to it, not a vague sometime later when it shipped. Call them at 800-331-0852 and they will be happy to give you this information.

Can anyone tell me the manufacture date of my model 49 with serial number of J6011xx

Catalog shows between 1976-1977 for s/n's J370001-J610000.

I would think yours would be the latter part of 1977.
