Can Model 547's handle +P ammo?
Hi all--
I'm a newcomer. Very much appreciate all I've learned from your knowledgeable, helpful and friendly commentary. I'm a big S&W fan, and love my reliable and accurate S&W's, a 629 6 inch and a 5903TSW. I just bought a 547 as a b/u gun to the 5903 (and for CCW?), but am wondering if it can handle +P 9mm? (I did a search for this on the Forum, but couldn't find anything conclusive. Sorry if it's already been answered.)
Thanks!

Hello, I have owned two 547s. I used all kinds of ammo in both, to include +P, +P+, NATO, etc, etc. Never had a problem with any of it. No sticking cases, no pierced primers, etc. I have also used +P,+P+, etc in my little 9MM Ruger SP101 revolver. Just like in the 547s, no problems with any of it. ymmv

Hello...Rock's cylinder was better than mine....mine cant handle +P+....have to tap the cases out from the front as i ease the extractor back. Have had to tap the extractor rod to get the cases out. I stick with the non +P stuff. I have some regular pressure Gold Dots in her now.

I too never had any troubles with sticking cases etc with the M547..
I always figured they were designed to fire Isreali Sub-Gun ammo..
I sent steve @ stevesmanuals the pdf of the M547 owners manual & it's now available online, Here's the link..

I recently fired some of the Uzi 115 gr. "Carbine" ammo through my 940 and was surprised how easily it extracted, though there was a lot of unburned powder left behind. Apparently it is loaded with a slower powder which is intended for carbine length barrels and excessive pressure would not be a concern in the revolvers.
I never owned a 547 but I imagine they would be susceptible to the same rough chamber issues that some 940s have.

I have not had a problem with +P in my 547s. Mostly I shoot standard ammo and have never tried +P+.

I emailed S&W Customer Service with that very question a few years ago. Their reply confirmed any currently manufactured 9mm ammunition up to and including Plus P.

Thanks, everybody. Wow, in less than 24hrs I have a half dozen really helpful responses. I cant wait to get my 547 now (due in at my FFL in next couple of days). Will let you all know how my Speer 124gr +P's do going thru it.
By the way, mine is a 3 inch. Does anybody here use their 3 inch as a CCW?
And thanks for the manual, Headknocker.

I interpreted your question differently than some other responders. I though you were asking if the cylinder and frame were strong enough to handle it. The answer to that question is "yes", the 547 was built on the .357 magnum K frame.

I used to run into a fellow M-547 shooter at a local range. He loved the 9mm and shot coffee cans full of his handoads every trip, through his S&W, a Luger, a big steel framed Star and some others, includung a Spanish Destroyer bolt action carbine.
One day, he had cooked up some really hot 9mm. They looked, sounded and felt like hot .357 Mag loadings. He shot six of them (his M-547 was a 4 incher) and the ejector rod wouldn't budge the empties. I went to my car for a piece of hardwood dowell, intending to use it to knock the empties out one at a time after removing the cylinder from the frame. He had less patience and used a plastic hammer to beat the ejector rod back. The cases didn't budge but the little fingers of the extractors were driven right through the brass case heads! It was something to see!
We took the cylinder out and using a couple of scrap wood pieces as an anvil, used the dowell to drive out the now shredded empty cartridge cases from the chambers. I expected the ejector mechanism to be damaged somehow, but it didn't appear to be.
I suggested that he find and buy a set of replacement fingers for his extractor, which he did, but he told me a couple seasons later that they weren't needed, the originals were still fine. I think they are a copper-beryllium alloy and apparently are strong as heck.
I have shot a small bit of commercial Plus-P through mine, but I doubt I have 1,000 rounds through it yet. I believe that, if you get passed the concept of a 9mm d.a. revolver, the gun is quite soundly engineered to deal with the cartridge. The limit pin really avoids any backing-out bottleneck or tapered case problems. The Model 53 .22 Remington Jet could have used something similar to the limit pin.
A rather unique sixgun. As long as S&W was making the M-547, I would have liked to have seen them make a target sighted, 6 inch barreled piece, maybe called it a K-9 Masterpiece.

Wow, Buff that's quite a statement about the durability and engineering of these 547's. Thanks! Glad to know I'm getting something even I shouldn't be able to break! I should be picking it up at my FFL tomorrow!

Might be a good lesson for my children.................
How did you remove the yellowing? Or is that a product of converting it to B&W?
I have an absolutely HUGE file of PDF's (thanks Steve and others!) covering everything from firearms to household tools and gadgets. Next to my pictures, it's the folder I would be most disappointed if I lost. It's backed up on three separate hard drives.
