Default Installing a HiViz sight on a J Frame

Anyone install on of these HiViz front sights on a pinned front sight J Frame?

SW1001 - S&W Sub 3" J Frame pinned front sight

Is it as simple as knocking out the pin, drilling the new sight based and reinstalling the pin?

That is what it looks like to me.

I bought a 360PD with the Hiviz site. I liked it so well I traded for another.
It has the red ramp site. I like it about as well but feel the Hiviz is better for defense. So I will probably replace it so both revolvers will be identical.

Midway has them for $29.99 rather than the 48 bucks at HiViz but they are green.

I was wondering if someone prefers the red ramp sights over the Hiviz we might could work a trade?

Have you heard anyone comment on their preferences?

Yes, I have one on my 640-1. The only thing is when drilling the new sight, you have to be careful not to over enlarge the pin hole in the barrel. You need a wire gauge drill bit size #54 or #55. It's so small I had to chuck it in my Dremel at low speed. If you are doing a 340, be aware the barrel shroud is very soft aluminum and you can easily oval out the pin holes if you don't hold the drill perfectly. Drill from both sides and meet in the middle, don't try to go straight thru. Tape the sides of the barrel too in case you slip (I did).

Thx Robotoid. Would a drill press work better than a Dremel?

Sir,

Just had the HiVez professionally installed by a master smith. Now that I have it, I am shooting all over the place.

Can you tell me how to align it so I can hit a paper plate at 7 yards? Tell me exactly how to align it with the two back sights?

I would greatly appreciate it. I know I am not using the proper nomenclature so please be kind!!! LOL!!

Thanks a lot!

The only way to fix a fixed sights gun is via Kentucky windage. You have to figure out what the POA/POI is by trial and error. It should not be "all over" at 7 yards. Have someone else shoot it with you to see if its you or the gun. On my 640-1, if I line the sights up perfectly, I cannot see the bottom half of the fiber optic green dot. Someday I'm going to have the rear sight milled a hair deeper and wider.
