Default Getting the hang of the 66 again.

Tried some of my first cast .357s today in it. Lee 140gr SWC over 9.0gr of Accurate No. 5. Going to back off of that a bit because I had a smidge of leading with 30 rounds.

Don't know what went wrong with the first group into the head. That was slow fire, single action and the 7th round is there because I had 1 140gr XTP lying around and I put it over the same charge to see what would happen.

But center mass there's 24 rounds there. All double-action. Started out around 7 yards and kept backing up a little with each reload until I was a bit over 10 yards away.

With the short sight radius of a snubby, that's some darned good shooting. However, next time shoot a smiley face on the head shots, makes for a fun target to hand on the wall of the garage.

Thanks. I was trying for the 1inch or smaller group single action that I used to be able to do.

I'm beginning to think my 41 year old eyes are a factor.

Wait until your eyes get to be 69 years old.

At 55 I am becoming VERY fond of reflex sights. The only problem is when I forget my readers on a range trip and need the help of a young buck to tell me which way to turn the elevation and windage screws. Tend to get a bit of a "superiority" attitude from the kids until they see how well those reflex sights work for us old farts.

BTW, mounted a J Point on my 610 and like it enough that at some point I'll have one on all of my revolvers. Clarity and paralax could be a bit better but JP Rifles make a direct mount for it using the S&W mounting pattern and it sits low on the gun and allows a good fit in a standard holster with just a bit of trimming to clear the sight. A really big plus is that on the 610 the gun shoots within 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the POA from 25 feet out to 125 feet. It's hard not to love a sight that lets you drill the X ring over a wide range of distances even when the dot is a bit fuzzy. BTW, I shoot the 610 with 40S&W and suspect that the 1 inch offset of the J Point and sighting it in at 100 feet has created a happy coincidence between the sight offset and the path the 40S&W takes. For sure, it beats the rail mounted sight on my 617, with that combination I see about 4 inches of drop between 100 feet and 25 feet. Once I can afford another J point I can gain back a bit more than inch of barrel to sight offset and can then put in the time to determine the optimum sighting distance for the 617.

I have become a fan of Red Dot sights at my advanced age. They have let me recapture my revolver skill to previous levels. My most shot revolver is the 625-6 with 5" barrel and a Simmons Red Dot Sight:

I had a good day at the range a couple of days ago with my S&W Model 520. It is sure a pleasant gun to shoot:

This reminded me of a story I heard when I was taking my CWP class. A father and son were taking the class. The son, being 25 years younger than his father, thought he was something special. During the qualifying portion of the class, shooting from 3, 7, and 15 yards, the son was really running his mouth by the time they were shooting the 15 yard shots. Knowing that they both would qualify, since you only have to have about 80% hits, the father suggested that they try to shoot smiley faces in the target from the 15 yard line.

After shooting, and retrieving their targets, the father had a perfect smiley face. The son's smiley face was much more ragged with a flyer. The son finally shut up and slinked away.

Later, while talking to the instructor, the father admitted to planning the smiley face thing the whole time. He had actually shot the smiley face, in his target, when he was at the 3 yard line and shot torso at the 15 yard line.

I thought the story was pretty funny.

My 'orange dot' sight needs no batteries...

I ordered my first .357M from the infamous Waco S&W closeout dealer. Brand new - 6" 66-6, with an added aftermarket scope rail, was $360 inc s/h - my ffl xfr was free - I worked there then (9/03). Bargain! I put the HiViz and Ahrends grips on it, lighter Wolff springs in it - before shooting it. What a tack driver! I'll never sell it...

The 66 is just a great revolver - the 4" balances perfectly - hard to improve on. I'd love a 2.5"/3". Like my .357M's - it'd never see real Magnums here - just my wimpy plinker loads - or milder .38's. Sure, I keep a couple of HKS #10 speedloaders full of Remington R38S12 - +P 158gr LHPSWC. All of my firearms have a 'double duty' of home defender.

Great shooting! My 'mature' eyes - Thursday I march down to the SSI office to apply for my benefits - after 46+ yr of contributing - really enjoy the fiber optic front sights. Also, I shoot with +1.00 Diopter full lens magnifier safety glasses - gives my prebsbyopic eyes the depth of field help they need in overcast-sun to use iron sights again - yippee!
