Default .22 LR or .22 mag snubbies?

I'd like to start looking into .22 S&W revolvers, preferably 2"-4"
Can anyone give me some model numbers to look into. Thanks.

The K frame model 18, the later full lug 17 and stainless 617 are 4". In J frames, the .22/32 Kit Gun, or model 34, in 2 or 4", by far the easiest to find. The stainless model 63, usually 4", hard to find in 2" and also seen in 5". The Airweight model 43, 3.5", adjustable sight. The modern 317 fixed or adjustable sight in 2" and 3". The model 51 .22 Magnum adjustable sight in 4", the 351 fixed sight in 2". The models 43, 317 and 351 are currently made. Please post a photo when you find one!

The new 2010 just introduced items are Model 43C, Product Code 160043 is the .22 LR, with a 1 7/8" barrel Centennial model. 8 Rounds, Matte Black aluminum Alloy frame & cylinder.

Model 351C, Product Code 160351 is the .22 magnum. 7 rounds, but everything else is like the 43C.

You may get lucky and run into a Mod. 650 or Mod 651. Both being chambered for the .22 Mag, the 650 has fixed sights and heavy 3" barrel. The 651 is similar to the Mod 63 only chambered for the .22 Mag. Both "J" frames. Good hunting! I apologize for not reading your post thoroughly before submitting my reply, neither of these have the snub nose to which you referred.

If you guys ever chronograph a revolver in 22LR & 22WMR you will be upset for buying one WMR for sure. There is a reason that in revolvers with changeable cylinders why the shoot to same point of aim.

Winchester white box that averages about 1500fps out of 20" rifle will average about 1100fps out of a 6" M-48 where standard 22LR rated 1250 will average about 1050fps. These numbers are not exact because I have either thrown
it away or lost thrown away the paper with all the data.

The reason for the big loss in velocity from the 3 or 4 different brands/weights we tried was due to couple big reasons, the barrel cylinder gap and short barrels. The main reason seemed to be the BC gap, but the barrel was only minor loss compared to cylinder gap. The slow burning rifle powder that is used is a killer in the short barrel guns like pistols and revolver, even the 22WMR Excel Arms 22WMR with 8" barrel suffered about 20% to 25% drop from a 20" rifle.

The other down side is the WMR is very ear damaging when fired w/o hearing protection, very much so when firing indoors. I have removed and stored the WMR cylinder from my Dan Wesson decided I did not need to waste the money and traded off my S&W 48 for a NIB 2206 that is a tack driver.

If you can find a J Frame Model 63 in stainless. It will make a fine gun for your first 22lr. Or look for the same thing in a blue finish, the Model 34, Both of these, are great guns to own..

.22mag always seemed like such a pointless round to me, makes as much noise as a 9mm, costs as much as 9mm ammo, and has the power of a .22lr.

That's a 317 with a steel barrel and adjustable sights. Only 120 made.

Great 317 with adjustable sights and steel barrel!

I've never been able to find a load that shoots POA with my old 317. Too bad because it would be a great kit gun.

I wish someone would make some .22mag pistol rounds. Then I could buy that kel tec PMR 30 and know it would function correctly without ever shooting it.

.22mag just has too slow burning power in it.

I do however want a .22mag taurus revolver.

My dad used to have a nickel plated sw .22lr revolver. Looked like a "cowboy gun" with a 6" barrel. He kicks himself everytime he sees one at the gun show because he sold it for like $200 and sees them for $500 in identical shape his was in.

In pistols yes. Because of the slow burning powder. It's made to push the bullet through a longer barrel than a pistol has.

However, .22mag certainly leaves .22lr in the dust when it comes to rifles.

If a .22mag pistol cartridge were ever made then that would be one bad dude for such a small round.

That sure is a pretty 63, but you should clean the Mother's polish from around the rear sight!

I had a friend (yeah, even I had at least one friend(:>)) who's passion was hunting ground hogs with a handgun. He has taken as many as 65 in a single year. He started out with a Model 28 S&W (Highway Patrolman) .357 magnum with 6" barrel. He used handloads and opened the hollow point on the Speer half jacketed bullet getting serious expansion and good results on 'hogs.

He also tried his Smith Model 29 (.44 Magnum) 6" with good results. By opening the Speer half jackets he got fist sized damage on ground hogs.

Then he got a 6" Smith .22 magnum. He stated that expansion results were quite similar to his .357. He was VERY happy with those results and his .22 magnum became his favorite "hog pistol". I know that is counter to others reported experience but it IS what he reported. I have seen a couple of 'hogs shot with the .44 magnum (you definitely do NOT have to shoot them twice(:>)) but never personally witnessed the damage done by .22 magnum. However, my friend did NOT exaggerate and I believe that the .22 magnum can be effective. Keep in mind that there are different .22 magnum rounds and I submit that some are more effective than others.

FWIW

My favorite 22LR handgun has become my Mod 34-2 2" Nickle.

It is a square butt, I do wish it was a round butt, however it matches my 4" Mod 34 that is also a Nickle gun.

I have done a LOT of practice shooting with this little gun, and its accuracy has suprised me.

I like it because I can carry it in my pocket, when in the field, as I always carry a 45 ACP or a 44Mag, as a primary.

I originally bought it to carry when I am hunting alone in the back country as you can carry 50 to 100 rounds of 22LR ammo in your pockets easily.

I have used it to kill a couple of squirrels for the pot. I have also killed 4 rattlers, also for the pot and a copperhead.
I have also used it to do a coup de gras on a couple of wild pigs, with CCI solids it always reaches the brain.

I have found it to be a most "handy" handgun.

Default .22 WMR Hornady Critical Defense Ammo

I saw a post regarding this ammunition on another forum and gathered from some of the replies received that the Hornady Critical Defense ammo with the 45 grain FTX bullets may be addressing the short barrel element of the revolver. I do not want to high jack this thread but since there have been several references made to the .22 Mag being somewhat equivalent to the .22 LR when fired from a short barrel I hope it will not detract from the original subject too much! Appreciate you indulgence.

I seem to be on a J-frame tear, as my last few new puchases, 1/13 351PD, 9/11 632 Pro, & 11/10 63 3", bear witness. The 3" 63 is an all day 8-shooting .22LR fun shooter which can carry CCI Stingers, reportedly 'nasty' at the terminal end from the 3" barrel. They certainly foul the gun up quickly! The 1.87" barrel 351PD was what the Hornady 45gr FTX Critical Defense round was designed for, so that is what I 'carry' in mine. Seven of them should get attacker's attention, if not deafen them. The recently installed seven new exsanguination ports will likely prove troublesome, even if the rounds don't 'vaporize' the bg.

Here is my part-time pocket protector:

It weighs 11.5 oz loaded - and I am not constantly hiking my britches up when I tote it as I do when my 642 is my pocket carry protector. It is too loud to be used for much plinking - and the ammo is way too dear. I plink with CCI MaxiMag 40gr TMJ & HP's, which I also use in my other .22 WMR, a 4" 651, while I 'carry' it with the Hornady Critical Defense, with spares in those little poly screwcap bottles (I knew I'd find a use for them!). The 351PD hits close enough from 7-12yd to be called coincident POA/POI with both the MaxiMags and the Critical Defense rounds. No recoil means quick follow-ups - easily done with the HiViz sight - but, did I mention it is loud??

Wow! My results differ dramatically from yours. I average 965 fps with 37-grain long rifle Super-X Hollow Points from 6” pre model 35, for 76 foot pounds of energy. Using Super-X .22 40 grain hollow point magnums from my 6” Model 648, I get 1375 fps for 168 foot points of energy – well over TWICE the power of long rifle cartridges. This is a very significant difference.

Granted, the difference will be smaller as the barrel length decreases, but they remained very significant when comparing my 3 ½ inch model 51 (magnum) and my 4” 34 (long rifle). And, yep, the magnum cartridges are MUCH louder.

351C
22 Magnum.
7 shot.
10.5 ounces.
No recoil.
No jam.
With Hornady Critical Defense ammo, 1050 fps.
About as powerful as a 22 from a rifle barrel, or a 380.
I ordered the wood grips that come on the 351PD
from Smith & Wesson.

Product: Model 351 C

I have a few short barrelled 22 calibre revolvers and have to say I prefer the 22 Magnum models. True most 22 Mag loads were originally designed for rifles but that has all changed with the popularity of these lightweight revolvers. Besides having more horsepower the 22 Magnum has much better bullets. Several manufacturers have developed Magnum loads tailored to short barrel handguns. Winchester PDX1, Hornady Critical Defense and Speer Gold Dots all perform well out of 2" barrelled revolvers.
Yesterday I went to the range with my Ruger LCR 22 Magnum and fired a couple of loads into water jugs just to see if they would expand.
1. Winchesters PDX1 expanded as you can see in my photos.
2. Hornady Critical Defense not as well but still expanded somewhat.
3. Speer Gold Dots expanded well.
All 3 loads were very accurate and penetrated into the 3'rd 1 gallon water jug. I have a 317, 43c, 351c all of which are as you know super light and easy to carry. My wife bought me the Ruger LCR 22 WMR as a gift, it's slightly bigger than the Smiths but I enjoy shooting it more and is worthy of consideration alongside the Smiths.

Talking

I just posted a reply in P&R about chrono data on 22 Mag from rifle and pistol. Unfortunately the shortest pistol barrel I shot was 5 1/2. The standard 40 gr Mag HP runs about 1300 fps in the pistol, and the 38 gr LR HP does about 1050 fps. The two 30 gr premium 22 mag loads did over 1600 fps from a 5 1/2" pistol barrel, I would think that justifies the cost of the ammo. I have been shooting woodchucks with 22 Mags for about 40 yrs and it has always been a good killer out to 100 yds or so. My hunting partner and I spent a couple years cleaning woodchucks out of a truck garden. I was shooting a Ruger 1022M and he had a bolt action in 17 HMR. Every chuck I shot died, usually right there, about 30% of his made it to the hole. He lost confidence in the gun and cartridge, I think maybe I was just a better shot. Anyway, I have a lot of respect in the 22 Mag, whether from rifle or pistol.

Being new to S&W, are those revolvers that polished from the factory or have y'all done some work on them?

Either way...wow!

Just got a 351c for carry and will hit the range soon. I considered the LCR in .22M but the lighter weight, smaller size, and extra round of the 351c make it the better choice for carry, IMO.

I like my 43C. I'll know how much I like it if I can ever get some ammo for it.
