Model 696-1 Markings Question
I have a Model 696-1 with markings (lettering) that almost appears to be decals (I know it's not). I mean the lettering is there but not stamped like the other Smiths I have. I feel like one "rub" and it's gone. Even the S&W emblem is put on in this manner. The SN looks etched, not stamped. Does anyone know of a case where they had a gunsmith "letter" the markings on a revolver? And what are these type markings anyway? Do all Smiths come this way now?
Maybe someone has asked this question before but I have been away for some time.
Thanks for the help.
Terry

They are Laser-etched. Don't use any form of polish, Flitz, Simi-Chrome, etc, or even a Lead Free cloth on the exterior, they will "wipe" off very easily.

Just as I thought, one "rub" and the markings are gone. Is there any gunsmiths out there that will redo the markings (not sure what to call the process) to make them permenant?
Regards,
Terry

Call S&W on Monday. I suspect that (1) there is no third party who will do this and (2) S&W can't/won't either, so you're probably stuck with whatever's left on the gun.

The "poor *** etching" has all but disappeared from 2 of my mtn. guns. Doesn't really bother me as they are much used shooters and will never leave.
