65-5 Serial# prefix not listed in S&W Catalog
I just bought a three inch model 65-5 today and I came home to check the serial number prefix of "CCP" and I didn't see it listed. Close prefixes are listed as 1998 but this is the first Smith I've ever had that the prefix is not listed. My 65-5 has no lock but does have a mim trigger and I think the hammer is mim also with firing pin on hammer. Did these come with Uncle Mike's rubber stocks from the factory?

I bought my 65-5 used but it had the box and docs. It was wearing magnas when I got it, that’s what the seller said came with it.

I think the MIM hammer and trigger also have the frame-mounted firing pin, and this would have had wood Magna stocks on it originally.
Perhaps the reason the CCP prefix is not listed is that is was made in the Soviet Union.
Seriously, there are many prefixes not listed in the standard reference book and 1998 is as good a guess as any for its production year.

My 65-5 has the mim hammer and trigger but has the firing pin on the hammer with no internal lock and grooved front and back straps with Uncle Mike’s rubber grips. Did any come factory with Uncle Mike grips?

Sometimes you just have to extrapolate based on known serial numbers. MIM trigger is hollow on the backside and MIM hammer has no firing pin. Don't think I ever saw any 65's with rubber grips from the factory.

The hammer on mine is a dark gray dull color just like the trigger. It looks mim anyway, but the firing pin is on it. Found it yesterday at a pawn shop with $449 on price tag. I walked out of there with it for $433.

Many other models (J frames) had factory rubber grips by the late 1990s but I don't think model 65s did.
You did very well on the price. Enjoy!

I had 2 65-5 Lady's. Both came with rosewood grips. I traded one to a forum member for a 696, and kept the other and polished it.
One I traded had the new style cylinder release, not sure about the back side of the trigger. One I kept has the old style latch and a not hollow trigger.
One I kept before polishing it.
One I traded. From the looks this one may of had a hollow trigger.

Interesting thread. I am being tempted by a seller who has a Mod. 65-5 (?), round butt with original stocks, the box and the documents. The condition is easily 98% and it has been fired but, extremely well cared for and is clean as a pin.
Your thoughts on the value of this fine revolver would be helpful in my negotiations.
Thank you in advance for your reply!

Should be early 1998 but you never know.

As you describe it, it is easily a $900 gun if it has a 3” barrel. Values on these have gone and stayed up over the past few years.

Here’s the 3”, 65-5 I bought yesterday that the original post is about. I suppose only the trigger is mim. I don’t guess it matters if the Uncle Mikes are factory or not, it’s what I have. I sure would like some nice open back combat stocks to show off the pretty grooved back strap.
I sold a 649-1 yesterday also to replenish the bank account. I’ll shoot and enjoy this 65-5 a lot more.

When I saw 65-5 I was thinking LS.
My 3" 65-3 has a smooth back strap.

That’s a nice 65. I suspect those Uncle Mike’s are original to the gun. Uncle Mikes were standard in the late 90’s. If you look in the 1997 catalog the 65 is shown with Uncle Mikes grips. Just about all the K frames are shown with them. The 19-7 I bought in ‘97 came with Uncle Mikes, and the 65-6 I bought in ‘99 also had them. They’re nice grips, especially if you plan to shoot the gun a lot. I just paid $35 for a used pair of those round butt K frame Uncle Mikes.

If it has a large groove on the back, it is a MIM trigger. The one pictured here seems to have the same coloring as the forged hammer. The MIM case colors tend to be more subdued and yellow-gray.

Here is the back strap grooves of the 65-5 gun in question of the original post with the Uncle Mikes off. It also has the same grooves on the front strap. A Lady Smith it definitely is not.

I have a 64-4 made in '97 with a CCH prefix and it too has the grooved front and back straps. If I remember correctly S&W only grooved the front and back straps for a short time in '97-'98

Haywood is correct, it's mentioned in the Smith Catalog as being made in 1998.
Also, the model 65 began shipping with synthetic grips in 1994 so it's possible that yours is original. Can't beat the looks of real wood, though.

Congratulations on your new to you Model 65! It looks great! I wanted one for years with the 3" barrel that you have. Finally picked one up last fall with a pair of Ahrends Cocobolo stocks. It's a 65-2. Thanks for sharing yours!

I bought my 65-5 second hand with the same grips, newer thumb latch, and forged hammer and trigger. CBB serial number prefix.

Yessir, that is what Kernel Crittendon told me at the time.
Thanks for taking the trouble to look that up though. A very nice gesture.
