Dash???
Ok, pardon my uber stupidity but what the heck is a dash?
I've searched it here but the only threads I come up with about it is talking about guns that don't have it.
So what is it/are they whatever ..please enlighten me..
Thanks..

The "dash" generally denotes a change. The next model of this S&W 64 had a "-1" after the "64".

Ahhh!!! Thank you so much.. In my head I was thinking like the dash (board) on a car...I kept looking for something on the guns that looked like it was missing!
Boy now I REALLY feel stupid!
Thanks again, Scott

Do not feel bad, even the most knowledgeable people on this forum will tell you they learn something new every day.

Engineering changes....
Without changing the design of the gun, in mid production they can incorporate a few minor changes to either make it better or make it cheaper to produce. When they do this the new guns will carry the dash number of that set of changes.
Examples: They stopped standard cutting the cylinder for moon clips, they changed the position of a gas seal, they moved the firing pin from a hammer mounted to a frame mounted one, change to a floating hand.
One of the improvements was that there were some complaints about cylinders locking up in the first 586/686 guns. At one point they included in the dash number change fixing this with a new firing pin and pin bushing that cured the problem.

When I first joined the forum I saw the phrase "P&R" gun over and over again and had no idea what people were talking about. Finally, I found out it meant Pinned barrel and Recessed chambers. Oh!
